Estany Forcat is a high-mountain lake in the Pessons area of Encamp, reached on foot from the Grau Roig side of Grandvalira. Visit Andorra places it at about 2,373 metres and describes the approach from the restaurant beside Estany Primer: follow the yellow-marked path behind it, then cross granite blocks to the lake. This is a small destination within a much larger glacial lake landscape, not a road-accessible viewpoint. The route makes the lake worthwhile for walkers who want a first substantial taste of the upper Pessons basin, but the rocky surface and altitude call for proper footwear and mountain conditions rather than a casual town stroll.

The usual access begins at the Cubil car park in the Grau Roig sector. From there a forest track leads toward Estany Primer de Pessons, where the lakeside restaurant provides a clear landmark and a possible break point when it is open. The onward line to Forcat leaves the main setting behind: the official hiking description directs walkers behind the restaurant, onto yellow markings and across granite blocks. Treat those markings as route guidance, not a promise of a smooth or step-free path. The lake's approach has rough stone underfoot, and rain, ice or snow can make the blocks more demanding than their modest map distance suggests.

Visit Andorra’s separate Estany de l’Illa route records Estany Forcat at 2,373 m, about 2.05 km into its itinerary and at an indicated 50-minute waypoint from the Cubil start. Those figures belong to that published route and its conditions; they are not a guaranteed walking time for every visitor. A second Pessons circuit source gives 5.95 km, around 3–6 hours and +707 m for a wider loop that visits several lakes and continues higher. Do not mistake those full-circuit totals for a lake-only out-and-back. If turning around at Forcat, check the actual map and return distance, because published routes may continue beyond the lake toward Estanys de la Solana, the GR7/GRP and Estany de l’Illa.

The name is easy to confuse with Estanys Forcats, the pair of lakes beneath the Estanys Forcats refuge in the parish of La Massana. This Forcat is the single lake on the Grau Roig–Pessons route in Encamp. The official waypoint coordinates are approximately 42.5261 north, 1.6835 east, which distinguish it from the other Andorran Forcat lakes. Check the map pin and route start before setting out; search results may shorten the name to “Estany Forcat” without showing the parish or access side.

Forcat is one link in a chain of water bodies formed in the Pessons high basin. The broader route continues past Estany Rodó and Estany del Meligar toward Estany de les Fonts and the upper lake below the Pessons ridge. The scenery changes with elevation and terrain: the lower approach connects forest track and open resort infrastructure, while the upper section moves into exposed, stony ground. Walkers can make the lake the turnaround point or combine it with a longer circuit, but the latter demands more time, fitness and navigation than visiting a single nearby lake. There are no visitor facilities at the water itself; food, toilets and shelter should not be assumed to exist at this waypoint.

The trailhead's resort setting is useful but seasonal. Grandvalira’s lifts, restaurant, road access and parking services operate under their own calendars and may change with snow, maintenance or weather. A winter ski map is not a summer hiking map, and a road open to a ski parking area does not establish that every mountain path is safe or snow-free. Visit Andorra recommends routes above 1,700 metres principally from late June to late September, with possible extensions from May to October only when weather and ground conditions allow. Check current forecasts, trail conditions and any road or parking notices before travelling to Grau Roig.

There is no fixed daily opening schedule for the lake. It is an outdoor natural feature, and this does not mean that the approach is safe or accessible around the clock. Snow cover, storms, wind, visibility, water levels and trail conditions can change the practical access window. The restaurant at Estany Primer has separate opening hours, and the Cubil car park and resort infrastructure also have their own conditions. Plan the outing in daylight, leave a margin for the return, carry water and layers, and turn back if the route markings or conditions are unclear.

Visitors who want a short walk can use Estany Primer as an easier stopping point and decide there whether the rougher approach to Forcat is suitable. Those continuing should follow the correct marked branch and avoid walking directly over wet or unstable granite where a path is visible. The official route recommends suitable footwear and warm clothing, and advises against walking alone. Because this is high terrain, a clear forecast in Encamp does not guarantee a clear forecast at 2,373 metres. Children and less experienced walkers may need more time and close supervision on the rockier section.

Estany Forcat is best understood as a rewarding waypoint rather than a serviced attraction: it adds a recognisable lake and a short mountain approach to the Pessons route, while the larger circuit supplies the longer outing. Confirm that the place pin is the Encamp lake, choose a route whose return distance and ascent suit the group, and verify seasonal access before departure. The combination of nearby trailhead infrastructure and rugged upper-basin terrain is convenient, but it does not remove the need for ordinary mountain preparation.
