Refugi de la Vall del Riu is an unguarded mountain shelter in the upper Vall del Riu, in Canillo parish. The Government and Federation of Andorran Mountaineering place it at 2,160 metres and list it as open year-round. It offers a basic resting and overnight point for hikers exploring one of Andorra’s quieter high valleys, including those continuing toward the Vall del Riu lakes, Coll d’Arenes and routes across the surrounding ridges.
This is a free refuge rather than a staffed mountain lodge. The current Government list describes a fireplace, stove, table and benches, with water nearby; FAM’s more concise record lists a fireplace. No guardian, restaurant, booking contact or regular maintenance service is advertised. Carry your own sleeping bag, food, water and lighting, and do not expect a prepared bed or meal. “Open all year” describes the shelter’s listed status, not the conditions of the high trail leading to it.
Capacity records conflict. The current Government listing says twelve beds and FAM lists ten. The current Visit Andorra refuge map gives eight, while the official lake-route page refers to a Vall del Riu hut with eight people but places it at 2,245 metres. Those figures may reflect older information or different recording of the nearby hut location. The current Government and FAM coordinates agree on the refuge at 2,160 metres, so this guide uses that identification and discloses the conflicting capacity and altitude references. Plan on a small hut with no guaranteed spare bunk, not on a fixed capacity.
One approach begins from Els Plans in Canillo parish. The official hiking route to Estanys de la Vall del Riu starts behind stone houses where a sign marks the trail. It initially follows dry-stone walls and the Riu Forat before entering a forest of mountain pine, birch and aspen. The path climbs toward the refuge and then continues over scree to the first and second lakes. Visit Andorra lists the full lake route at 5.86 kilometres with about 720 metres of ascent and difficult grade. Those figures cover the lake itinerary, not simply the approach to the hut; allow for a strenuous climb and verify the current route description before setting out.
Another approach follows the marked path from Canillo village. Visit Andorra’s medium-distance trail circuit starts by the tourist office, follows the road shoulder for its first kilometre and then takes a steep trail marked toward Refugi Vall del Riu. The climb eases after old bordes and a spring, before the marked path reaches the refuge. That itinerary forms part of a much longer 18-kilometre trail-running loop over high terrain and a technical ridge. A short section to the hut should not be confused with completing the whole circuit; study the map and choose an out-and-back or alternative descent suited to your group.
Beyond the refuge, the valley opens into a high alpine basin of lakes and rocky slopes. Estany de Baix de la Vall del Riu and the higher lakes lie farther up the route, while ridges such as Coll d’Arenes connect to other mountain itineraries. The hut therefore acts as a natural threshold between the wooded lower valley and exposed upper terrain. Hikers planning onward travel should expect scree, steep ground and changing visibility. The refuge can be a useful pause or shelter, but it is not a safe substitute for route planning or a weather turnaround decision.
The area is quieter than the main resort corridors, and the approach rewards visitors interested in valley landscapes, forests and high lakes. The stream, stone walls and tree cover give way gradually to open slopes. Wildlife may be present, but sightings are not guaranteed; observe animals from a distance and keep food secured. The route is best undertaken in suitable mountain conditions. Visit Andorra recommends outings above 1,700 metres from late June to late September, with May or October possible only if weather and ground conditions allow.
There is no road access to the refuge. The Els Plans and Canillo approaches involve walking from the valley floor, and no dedicated hut parking is provided in the refuge listing. Follow current signs rather than relying only on a pin or old track, and check local parking, construction and trail conditions. Carry sufficient water: “nearby water” does not guarantee flow or potability throughout the year. Snow, ice, storms and short winter daylight can make an otherwise clear path unsafe.
Use the shelter responsibly. Take all rubbish out, leave the interior clean, respect others sleeping and conserve any fuel. If the refuge is full, do not camp or light a fire in a prohibited place; have a safe alternative planned. Check current refuge and weather information before relying on an overnight stop. Refugi de la Vall del Riu is most valuable as a simple link between Canillo’s lower paths and its upper mountain country, provided walkers treat its open status as a facility listing—not a guarantee of access, services or space.
