Cap dels Clots de Massat is a mountain summit in Canillo parish, rising to about 2,572 metres according to current peak mapping. Some hiking records use the name Tossa dels Clots de Massat for the high point or ridge. It stands above the Clots de Massat terrain between the Bordes d’Envalira area and the Port Dret–Siscaró mountain network. The summit is a natural feature rather than a developed attraction: there are no facilities, staffed hours or guaranteed trail services at the top.
The mountain’s appeal is the contrast between an accessible valley-side start and a steep climb into open high ground. A recorded circular route begins near Bordes d’Envalira and climbs through grass, forest and streamside terrain before reaching the ridge. The track reports about 7.4 kilometres, 657 metres of ascent and roughly five hours, but it is a user-submitted route from 2015, not an official route specification. Another current route network crosses nearby Clots de Massat toward Port Dret and Pic d’Ortafà. Do not confuse that maintained or marked corridor with a guaranteed marked path directly to the summit; the last ascent and return may require navigation beyond the main trail.
Visit Andorra’s GRP-run stage from Soldeu describes the official route’s approach through the Clots de Massat area after Refugi Pla de les Pedres. It climbs toward Port Dret and Pic d’Ortafà, then descends toward Estany de Siscaró and its refuge. The route notes that streams may occur regularly but can diminish in dry weather, and it identifies a technical section around Tossa de Juclar. Cap dels Clots de Massat is a separate summit in the same wider high-country network. If incorporating it into a traverse, confirm the summit spur on a current map and avoid assuming that the official GRP stage visits the exact high point.
At the summit, the landscape is exposed and shaped by glacial hollows, rocky ridges, alpine grass and small wet areas. Views can extend toward Port Dret, the Siscaró basin and the surrounding Canillo peaks when visibility is good. The open ridge offers little shelter from wind or sudden weather, and fog can obscure the easiest line back down. The name “Clots” refers to the characteristic hollows and basins below the ridge; the summit should not be treated as a lake or a built viewpoint. There are no visitor facilities or information panels at the top.
The area is used for communal grazing. Canillo’s 2025 communal ordinances list the Clots de Massat among areas reserved for the communal herd until 8 September, while allowing cattle under specified local practices. This is an important reminder that the landscape is active pastoral land, not an empty recreation zone. Do not approach or feed livestock, keep dogs under control in accordance with local rules, and leave gates as found. Seasonal herd management or other communal-use notices may change how a route should be approached; check parish information if travelling during grazing season.
The summit’s name and height are not perfectly standardized in all online maps. AcampAND lists Cap dels Clots de Massat at 2,572 metres and gives coordinates around 42°34′21″N, 1°41′42″E. A map-derived listing may label the same area or name point at a markedly different altitude, reflecting a feature mismatch rather than a confirmed alternate summit. Confirm the actual high point with a topographic map, contour lines and terrain rather than navigating only to a textual map label. Nearby Port Dret and Pic d’Ortafà are distinct peaks or passes on separate points of the ridge system.
Access is on foot from the Bordes d’Envalira / Port d’Envalira side or by connecting from the marked GRP network. Start and route choice affect the climb and difficulty substantially. The older circular track from Bordes d’Envalira is not a substitute for current official navigation, and its five-hour estimate should not be generalized to all approaches. Carry an offline topographic map, allow extra time for route finding and keep a conservative turnaround time. In winter, snow and ice transform the grassy and rocky slope into mountaineering terrain; summer trail-running information for nearby routes is not a winter access recommendation.
There are no opening hours because the summit is open mountain terrain. Weather, snow, livestock management and the condition of unmaintained paths are the relevant access constraints. Check the forecast, bring layers and water, and avoid the ridge in thunderstorms or poor visibility. Streams are not assured in dry weather, and there is no refuge at the summit itself. Refuges such as Pla de les Pedres or Siscaró lie in the broader network but are not immediate emergency services.
Cap dels Clots de Massat is best approached by hikers comfortable with steep ascents and independent navigation who want a quiet high point rather than a serviced attraction. Pair it with a carefully selected route through the Clots de Massat or Port Dret area, but do not confuse the summit with the GRP trail itself. Respect communal grazing use, turn back if the ridge becomes unsafe and plan the descent before leaving the marked path.
