Dajti National Park (Mali i Dajtit) in Tirana, Albania

Dajti National Park covers the mountain landscape east of Tirana and is the capital’s most accessible large natural escape, rising to roughly 1,611–1,613 metres above sea level. Official tourism sources describe it as a place for hiking, mountain biking, camping, picnics and panoramic views, while the Dajti Ekspres cable car provides the easiest visitor route from the city to the upper mountain complex. It suits travelers who want mountain air and views without committing to a remote expedition. The main limitation is that the park itself is not a single gated attraction: cable-car hours, restaurant hours and activity hours are separate from access to trails and roads, and weather can change the experience quickly.

The national park lies about 25–26 kilometres east of central Tirana by road, although the lower Dajti Ekspres station is much closer to the city. Albania’s tourism authority describes the park as a popular weekend destination for people from Tirana, with dense forest, mountain scenery and a mix of outdoor recreation. The park is also formally protected: a current 2026 register from Albania’s National Agency of Protected Areas identifies Dajti Mountain National Park as a Category II national park under the 2022 protected-area decision.

The easiest first visit is usually by Dajti Ekspres. The operator says the Austrian-built cable car takes about 15 minutes from the lower station to the upper station and calls it the longest cableway in the Balkans. As the gondola climbs, the city falls away and the landscape changes from outer Tirana neighborhoods to forested slopes and broad views over the plain. On a clear day, official tourism material says the panorama can extend toward Durrës and the Adriatic.

Current cable-car hours are clearly published. The system runs Monday and Wednesday through Friday from 09:00 to 18:30, Saturday and Sunday from 09:00 to 19:00, and is normally closed on Tuesday for weekly maintenance. If Tuesday is a public holiday, the operator says it remains open. Visitors should always check the operator’s social channels for weather or technical closures before leaving Tirana.

Ticket pricing is more fluid. The official Dajti Ekspres ticket page now tells visitors to ask at the lower station or contact the operator for current prices rather than publishing a fixed fare online. Some tourism pages still show older euro-denominated prices, but those should not be treated as locked 2026 tariffs. Tickets are sold at the lower station, are normally valid on the day of purchase, and can include combination options with Mini Golf or the Adventure Park.

The upper complex is not the national park in its entirety, but it offers an easy introduction to the mountain. Current operator hours list the Adventure Park, Mini Golf and Ballkoni Dajtit restaurant separately from the cable car. Travelers can therefore arrive on the mountain even when one activity has different hours, but Tuesday closure affects the main cable-car route.

Hiking is the stronger choice for visitors who want more than views and restaurants. Albania’s official tourism authority promotes a route from the cable-car upper station through oak forest toward Cherry Pass and the Tujani peak area. Visit Tirana places Tujani at about 1,583 metres and says the route is marked, though it also warns hikers to prepare for severe mountain weather. The broader Dajti ridge rises higher, and conditions can be very different from the city below.

Protected-area rules matter once a visit becomes more adventurous. The National Agency of Protected Areas states that national parks are divided into management zones with different protection levels and that core zones allow only low-impact activities such as walking and nature observation. Marked trails are intended for hiking and, where appropriate, biking. Off-road driving or other intrusive activities should not be assumed to be permitted simply because a track is visible.

Getting to the lower cable station is straightforward but not entirely intuitive for first-time visitors. Dajti Ekspres recommends the blue Qendër–Porcelan bus from near the Clock Tower and Skanderbeg Square, followed by a short uphill walk. The operator currently publishes a 40-lek one-way bus fare and a typical center-to-station travel time of about 20–30 minutes, though city traffic can change that. It also lists free parking at the lower station and warns that spaces can fill during snow or special events.

The operator’s current accessibility rule is important: wheelchairs are not permitted on the cable car, and bicycles are also prohibited. That means the most convenient visitor route is not suitable for every traveler. People with mobility needs should investigate road access to mountain facilities separately rather than assuming the gondola is accessible.

Season changes the character of the park. Summer offers cooler air than the city and longer time for hiking, while winter can bring snow and reduced road or trail comfort. Spring and autumn are often attractive for walking, but clouds can remove the panoramic views that draw many visitors. A flexible schedule is valuable because a clear morning can be far more rewarding than a hazy or stormy afternoon.

A simple cable-car outing with lunch and views can take three to five hours from central Tirana. Hiking to Tujani or spending time at the Adventure Park can turn it into a full-day excursion. Dajti National Park is most rewarding when visitors distinguish the protected mountain from the commercial upper-station complex: use the cable car for easy access, but remember that the real attraction is the landscape, forest and ridge beyond it.
