Description

Dajti (Albanian: Mali I Dajtit) is a mountain and national park on the outskirts of Tirana, Albania, rising to 1,613 meters (5,292 feet) above sea level. The Skanderbeg range includes the Dajti. The mountain is often covered with snow throughout the winter, making it a favorite refuge for Tirana residents who seldom see snow. It has pine, oak, and beech woods on its slopes, and canyons, waterfalls, caverns, a lake, and a historic castle in its interior.

Dajti National Park was established in 1966 and has grown to around 29,384 hectares since 2006. Albanian Agency of Protected Areas (AKZM) and Tirana Municipality Parks and Recreation Agency share control over the region (APR). The new Dajti Mt National Park tourist information station opens in Fushe Dajt in 2019, near the TV and radio towers along SH47 route.

A short asphalted mountain road leads to Fusha e Dajtit, where the peak may be accessible. This was formerly a summer camp, but it is now home to several eateries as well as radio and television transmitters. The view of Tirana and its plain is spectacular from this little spot. This is why the Balcony of Tirana was named after it.

Hikers and tourists to the mountain may now use an Austrian-built gondola lift from Tirana’s eastern suburbs to 1050 meters high Fusha e Dajtit (Plain of Dajti). At the peak of the mountain, there are multiple radio and television transmitters.

In the region, traces of ancient villages and later era fortifications have been uncovered.
