Ksamil

Ksamil

Ksamil is a settlement and former municipality on the southern Albanian coast, and it is located inside Butrint National Park. Upon the 2015 reform of local government, it became a subdivision of the municipality of Sarand. The population was 2,994 at the time of the 2011 census, but according to the Civil Offices, it was 9,220. The municipal unit comprises the communities of Ksamil and Manastir. In 1966, during the communist period, the beach hamlet of Ksamil was constructed south of the city of Sarand, along the road leading to Butrint.

Ksamil is one of the most popular beach destinations for both local and international visitors. Northern Albania’s Ionian Coast and Ksamil Beach were featured in the Guardian’s 2013 list of the 20 most affordable beach vacations.

The adjacent Ksamil Islands are the primary attractions. The beach on the mainland is modest yet clean.

During communism, the region became renowned for its olive oil, lemons, and tangerines production. In 2010, national officials dismantled more than 200 unlawful constructions that violated the town’s master plan and Butint National Park’s integrity. The officials have failed to remove certain remnants of the destroyed structures.

In 1992, the population of the hamlet of Ksamil was a mixture of Muslim Albanians (1125), Orthodox Albanians (210), and Greeks (520).

The official population estimate for the commune of Ksamil in 2014 was 9,215, of whom 4,207 were members of the Greek minority.
