Albania, which was closed to foreigners for the majority of the 20th century, has long been the mystery of Mediterranean Europe. On most travel maps, its undulating mountains, fortified cities, and beautiful beaches were simply a rumor until very recently.
In 1991, however, with the end of a particularly severe form of communism, Albania hesitantly opened its borders. The first interested travelers encountered a region where old standards of behavior still reigned and where the wind whistled over the broken remains of half-forgotten Greek and Roman ruins.
Albania’s magnificent mountain scenery, crumbling castles, noisy city, and beaches that match any in the Mediterranean continue to amaze a quarter century after the fall of communism.
