How To Travel To Vietnamese Demilitarized Zone
Dong Ha, on the coast, is the only important city in the area. It is located on Highway 1 and is easily accessible from Hue and Da Nang.
DMZ Tours (located along Le Duan street) can arrange tours from Dong Ha for roughly US$15-17. This tour will pick you up from Hue in the bus and take you to the tunnels, Dakrong bridge, rockpile, and Khe Sanh. Although it does not include Camp Carol, Con Tien, or food/water, it is a delightful ride with a lively guide (some propaganda).
Many travel agencies in Hue provide convenient day journeys by bus. They are inexpensive at US$10-15 per person, but be aware that you will need to get up extremely early, as the trips typically begin at 06:00. Expect to arrive in Hue between 18:00 and 19:00. You will also be herded back onto the bus to go to the next stop, only to be met with some stragglers. If your bus group is large, the Vinh Moc Tunnels might become congested.
You can travel by car, which can be costly, but if it’s raining, as it frequently does, you’ll be pleased you did. Private excursions can also take you to places where huge buses and large groups cannot.
Tours by motorcycle can be organized, but unless you are a diehard, the distances for a round journey can be as much as 300 kilometers. If you wish to go on a motorcycle tour, you should stay the night in Dong Ha and make your reservations there.
Booking through a hotel will almost certainly cost you more money due to commission.
