Description

Cua Bac church is a historic church in Hanoi with distinctive architectural elements that enhance the city’s urban landscape. The Roman Catholic Cua Bac Church was constructed in 1931 by the French administration of Indochina as part of Hanoi’s municipal plan. The church’s original name was Queen of Martyrs, but it was renamed Our Lady of Hanoi and Cua Bac church because it was constructed at the North Gate of Thang Long.

The Cua Bac Catholic Church was designed by a French architect, Hébrard, in a rectangular form, blending Asian-European style – dignified and old architectural style. The Cua Bac Catholic Church is regarded representative of this non-symmetrical architecture. Cua Bac Church is notable for its roof tiling system, which consists of multiple floors, many layers, and is layered unevenly. Visitors pay particular attention to its architecture.

Today, along with Ham Long Church and Saint Joseph Cathedral, Cua Bac Church is one of Hanoi’s three most prominent churches. In November 2006, during President George W. Bush’s official visit to Vietnam, the Cua Bac Catholic Church hosted a joint worship service of Vietnamese Catholics and Protestants.
