Its main limitation is deliberate: access is restricted at night during the turtle nesting season, and parts of the sand are managed primarily for wildlife rather than convenience.

Official Muğla tourism information describes İztuzu as a 4.5-kilometre beach reached from Dalyan either by road or by boats that travel through the reed-lined channel. The geography is unusual because the sand lies between salt water on the Mediterranean side and the freshwater environment of Sülüngür Lake and the Dalyan delta behind it. The result is a beach day that feels connected to a much larger wetland landscape. A road arrival gives broader views over the delta and lake, while the boat approach makes the waterways themselves part of the excursion.

Sea turtles are not a decorative theme here; they are the reason the beach has strict seasonal rules. In April 2026, Türkiye’s Directorate of Communications reported that DEKAMER teams had prepared the 4.5-kilometre nesting shore for a new season, replacing damaged stakes and information signs. Official tourism guidance states that during the May-to-September nesting period the beach is closed to public use between 20:00 and 08:00. Visitors should also stay away from marked nests, avoid disturbing protective cages and follow instructions about umbrellas, digging and lighting.

Those rules change the rhythm of a visit. The best approach is to arrive during the legal daytime window and plan to leave well before the evening closure. Early morning can be attractive for cooler temperatures, but the exact opening of staffed facilities may be later than shoreline access. An Education Ministry outdoor-learning listing currently shows 10:00–17:00 visitor hours, while the tourism authority describes the broader conservation closure as 20:00–08:00. These are not necessarily contradictory: one may describe managed visitor services and the other the legal access window for the protected beach. Because service hours can change, visitors should check locally if toilets, cafés or equipment rental are essential.

Facilities are concentrated toward the ends of the beach rather than evenly distributed along the entire sandbar. The official Muğla tourism page notes food and drink services, showers, sun loungers and umbrellas at both ends. That is useful because the central sections are more exposed and less developed. Conservation requirements also affect where umbrellas may be placed. A traveler who expects continuous rows of resort services will misunderstand İztuzu; the beach is better experienced as a protected natural area with limited visitor infrastructure.

Getting there from Dalyan offers two genuinely different options. The road follows the delta and Sülüngür Lake toward the beach, and the elevated parts provide openings where the landscape can be seen from above. The boat route leaves Dalyan and follows the channel through reeds to the seaward end, turning the journey into part of the experience. Travelers with a rental car gain flexibility, while the boat is attractive for anyone who wants to avoid driving and see the delta from water level. Return schedules should be confirmed before settling on the beach, especially late in the day.

Allow at least three to four hours if the goal is swimming and relaxing, and a half day is more realistic when the boat journey, turtle-center interest or a long walk on the sand is included. The beach’s length encourages movement, but nesting zones should never be crossed carelessly just to shorten a route. The Mediterranean side can vary with wind and waves, so families should judge conditions on arrival rather than assume the entire shoreline is uniformly calm. There is no substitute for normal sea safety simply because the beach is famous for conservation.

Anyone who needs a firm surface, accessible toilet or assisted beach access should confirm the current setup at the specific end they plan to use. Natural sand remains a practical barrier even where ramps or accessible facilities exist. The same caution applies to strollers and visitors who have difficulty walking long distances in heat.

İztuzu combines well with Dalyan rather than competing with it. A day can include the river channel, views toward the Lycian rock tombs near Kaunos, a beach stay and, if open to visitors, time at DEKAMER’s sea-turtle rehabilitation center. The sequence explains why the area is protected: archaeological heritage, river wetlands, freshwater habitats, marine shoreline and nesting wildlife are compressed into one small district. Visitors should resist trying to turn every stop into a rushed photo opportunity.

The most useful mindset is simple: come for a beach day, but behave as a guest in a breeding habitat. Bring sun protection, water and footwear suitable for hot sand; use established facilities; keep clear of marked nests; do not plan to remain after the seasonal evening closure; and do not use bright lights on the beach at night. With those limits respected, İztuzu offers something many heavily developed Mediterranean beaches cannot: a large natural shoreline where tourism is visibly required to make room for another species.
