Köprülü Canyon National Park in Manavgat, Turkey

Köprülü Canyon National Park is a large protected landscape north of Manavgat and Serik, centred on the Köprüçay River, steep canyon country and a remarkable mix of outdoor activity and archaeological remains. It is especially suitable for travellers who want an active day—rafting, walking or viewpoint stops—rather than a passive scenic drive. Families can use commercial rafting sections with licensed operators, while hikers and history-minded visitors can focus on Roman bridges, Selge and the park’s forested valleys. The main limitation is scale: “Köprülü Canyon” is not one compact attraction, so transport, activity choice and the exact meeting point matter.

The park was declared in 1973 and today covers a much larger protected area than many older guidebooks suggest. Türkiye’s current nature-tourism portal lists 47,473 hectares spanning parts of Antalya’s Manavgat and Serik districts and extending into Sütçüler in Isparta. Its protected features include the Köprüçay, Oluk Bridge, Büğrüm Bridge, Selge Ancient City, Tazı Canyon, springs and distinctive forest communities. This breadth explains why two visitors can have very different “Köprülü Canyon” days: one may spend hours on the river near Beşkonak, another may drive toward Selge, and another may concentrate on Tazı Canyon and viewpoints.

Rafting is the activity most strongly associated with the park. Antalya’s provincial tourism authority describes the Köprüçay as one of Türkiye’s important rafting rivers and notes that commercial trips operate in the Beşkonak area. The commonly used route passes beneath or near historic Oluk Bridge and continues through a sequence of rapids; official guidance distinguishes sections appropriate for amateurs from more demanding canyon water that should not be entered casually. That makes operator choice important. Visitors should use a properly organised trip, follow helmet and buoyancy-aid instructions, and avoid assuming that every stretch of the river is suitable simply because rafting is widely advertised.

The archaeological layer gives the park unusual depth. Oluk Bridge is a surviving Roman crossing over the Köprüçay, and the road toward Selge climbs through dramatic terrain to the ancient mountain city near today’s Altınkaya settlement. The Antalya culture authority places Selge around 950 metres above sea level and lists remains including the theatre, walls, temples, agoras, a columned street, baths, cisterns and basilicas. It is possible to combine river scenery and archaeology in one day, but doing both properly takes time. A rafting booking with fixed transfers may leave little room for a long independent exploration of Selge.

Tazı Canyon has become another major draw. The Ministry of Culture’s tourism portal places it inside Köprülü Canyon National Park and describes a roughly four-kilometre canyon with cliffs rising about 300–400 metres. The current national-park portal also publishes a separate 2026 tariff for the Tazı Canyon day-use area. That fee should not be confused with the cost of rafting, transport or other privately operated activities elsewhere in the park. If Tazı Canyon is the priority, visitors should confirm the exact access point and road conditions rather than simply navigate to a generic “Köprülü Canyon” pin.

The park’s natural value is substantial. Current conservation data records at least 574 plant taxa, including a large number of endemic plants, and a wide range of vertebrate species. The Köprüçay supports native fish, while the broader landscape provides habitat for wild goats and several notable bird species. This is one reason visitors should resist treating the canyon as an unrestricted adventure playground. Marked routes, warning signs and activity regulations protect both people and sensitive habitats. The river can look inviting from picnic or rafting areas, but swimming or entering currents should be judged locally and never assumed safe from appearance alone.

For independent visitors, Beşkonak is the most useful orientation point for the classic rafting and canyon section. The provincial tourism authority directs drivers from Antalya toward Serik, then via the signed turn through Taşağıl to Beşkonak; from Manavgat, Taşağıl is also the usual approach. Public transport does not provide the same flexibility across this large landscape, so organised transfers or a car are often more practical. Road time can be significant, and branches toward Selge or Tazı Canyon add mountain driving. A carefully planned route is better than attempting to improvise several distant park sectors in one afternoon.

The current Nature Conservation and National Parks portal publishes general visitor hours of 07:00 to 20:00. Those hours apply to the protected area’s managed access framework, but individual rafting companies, day-use facilities and archaeological components can operate on different schedules. The same official portal lists a 2026 Tazı Canyon tariff, showing how specific facilities within the park may have their own controls. For rafting, reserve a departure time rather than relying on the general park window. For viewpoints and archaeological stops, daylight and road conditions should guide the plan even when the formal closing time is later.

Accessibility depends heavily on the chosen activity. Some roadside and commercial river areas may be relatively easy to reach, but rafting requires entering and leaving boats, Selge involves uneven historic terrain, and canyon viewpoints can include rough paths and exposed edges. No single accessibility label can accurately describe the whole park. Travellers with reduced mobility should ask a specific operator about the exact route, vehicle access and boarding arrangements. A half-day is enough for one focused activity such as rafting, while a full day is more realistic for rafting plus a bridge, viewpoint or archaeological stop. The best visits choose one primary experience and add nearby elements rather than trying to cover the entire park.
