Ahmed Adnan Saygun Arts Center, widely known by the abbreviation AASSM, is İzmir Metropolitan Municipality’s major multi-purpose venue for concerts, exhibitions and cultural events on Mithatpaşa Street in Güzelyalı, Konak. Opened on 27 December 2008, it occupies the site of a former trolleybus garage and maintenance workshop that was transformed into a large contemporary arts complex. This is not a museum with one permanent collection, so the quality of a visit depends on the day’s exhibition or performance program. It is most rewarding for concertgoers, exhibition visitors and travelers interested in modern cultural architecture. A gallery-only stop can take about 45 to 60 minutes, while a concert or festival visit should be planned around the event schedule.

The center is named after Ahmed Adnan Saygun, one of the composers associated with the “Turkish Five” and a central figure in twentieth-century Turkish classical music. Municipal sources note his importance as the composer of the first Turkish opera and as the first person to receive the title of State Artist. Giving his name to İzmir’s flagship municipal arts center connects the building to the city’s musical identity rather than using a generic performing-arts label.

The project emerged from an architectural competition. İzmir Metropolitan Municipality identifies architect Tevfik Tozkoparan as the designer who converted the former trolleybus facility into a complex of roughly 30,000 square meters. The center includes a main auditorium seating a little over one thousand people, a smaller hall of roughly 240 seats, five exhibition galleries, foyers, meeting spaces and outdoor event areas. The acoustic design of the main halls was developed with ARUP, giving the building a serious concert function rather than treating music as one use among many.

Since opening, AASSM has hosted a wide range of classical, jazz, contemporary and popular music, along with opera, ballet, festivals, conferences and exhibitions. The official center describes itself as a home for İzmir Metropolitan Municipality’s symphony orchestra and polyphonic choirs, while its program also includes visiting orchestras, soloists and cultural organizations. This breadth is important for travelers: there is no single “AASSM experience.” One evening may be a ticketed orchestral concert, another day a free photography exhibition, and another a festival or public discussion.

The current September 2026 program illustrates that flexibility. AASSM is hosting the 32nd İFOD Traditional Photography Exhibition, themed “Freedom,” from 1 September to 14 October 2026 in the upper-floor west gallery. İzmir’s municipal arts portal lists the exhibition as free and gives a daily viewing window of 10:00–17:30. The center also has later concert and event times, so those gallery hours should not be mistaken for the opening hours of every activity in the building. Anyone visiting for a specific performance should use the official AASSM event page and ticket information rather than relying on a general venue schedule.

Transport is one of the venue’s strengths. AASSM’s official directions list multiple municipal bus routes stopping at Ahmed Adnan Saygun, the Konak tram stop named for the center, a roughly 800-meter walk from Fahrettin Altay metro, and about 900 meters from Göztepe ferry pier. Those options make public transport practical even for evening events. The venue is on a major urban corridor, so allowing extra time before a concert is sensible, especially when you need to collect tickets or find the correct hall.

Admission depends on what you are attending. Many exhibitions and public cultural programs are free, while concerts can be free, invitation-based or ticketed through the announced seller. The current İFOD exhibition is free, but that should not be generalized to every AASSM event. The useful planning habit is to confirm three things together: the date, the exact hall or gallery, and whether a ticket or registration is required. The building is large enough that arriving only at the advertised start time can make an otherwise simple visit unnecessarily rushed.

Accessibility information is more positive than at many historic attractions. A Turkish Ministry of Education outdoor-learning listing identifies barrier-free access and guidance services at AASSM. The modern multi-level complex was designed for public events, but visitors who need a particular wheelchair seating position, companion seat or step-free backstage or gallery route should still contact the box office before buying performance tickets. For exhibition visits, the same advance check can confirm which gallery floor is being used.

AASSM fits naturally into a broader cultural day in İzmir. Arkas Sanat Alsancak offers a smaller exhibition-focused experience inside a historic consular building, while Tarihi Asansör provides a completely different combination of functional heritage and city views. The contrast is useful: Arkas shows adaptive reuse of early twentieth-century architecture, the elevator shows urban infrastructure preserved as a landmark, and AASSM demonstrates how the municipality repurposed a former transport site for contemporary cultural life.

The center is worth visiting when the program matches your interests rather than simply because the building is large. Its strongest qualities are the professional performance halls, changing exhibitions, reliable public-transport connections and the density of cultural programming. Check the official calendar shortly before you go, note whether you are headed to the main hall, small hall or one of several galleries, and allow enough time to navigate the complex. Approached that way, AASSM is one of the clearest places to see present-day İzmir as an active cultural city rather than only a destination of archaeological and Ottoman-era landmarks.
