Odunpazarı Modern Museum (OMM) in Eskişehir, Turkey

Odunpazarı Modern Museum, widely known as OMM, is a modern and contemporary art museum in Eskişehir's historic Odunpazarı district. Founded by collector Erol Tabanca and opened in September 2019, it is notable both for its exhibitions and for the 4,500-square-metre timber building designed by Kengo Kuma and Associates. OMM suits visitors interested in contemporary art, architecture and design, and it is easy to combine with the surrounding historic houses and municipal museums. The decisive limitation on 15 September 2026 is that the museum is temporarily closed from 14 to 25 September while a new exhibition is installed; it is scheduled to reopen on 26 September 2026.

The building is an attraction in its own right. Kengo Kuma and Associates designed a composition of stacked timber volumes inspired by Odunpazarı's traditional wooden houses and by the area's history as a wood market. Inside, the spaces move from larger ground-floor galleries to smaller rooms above, with a central atrium bringing natural light into the building. The architecture does not merely contain the art; circulation, changing scale and timber surfaces shape the way visitors encounter the exhibitions. Travellers who are more interested in architecture than contemporary art can still find the museum worthwhile.

OMM's collection is built around the Erol Tabanca and İdil Tabanca collections and includes works in different media. The museum's programme has repeatedly combined artists from Türkiye with international figures and has included painting, sculpture, installation, design, digital work and site-specific commissions. Tanabe Chikuunsai IV's large bamboo installation in the main hall is one of the museum's best-known permanent or long-term architectural-art encounters. Because OMM uses a changing exhibition model, visitors should not rely on old photographs to predict exactly what will be on view.

The closure follows the end of Wide Expanse on 13 September 2026. OMM's official site now announces Echoes of the Earth for 26 September 2026 through 12 September 2027, bringing together works from the Erol Tabanca Collection around nature, memory, history and mythology. This is a genuine installation break rather than an ordinary weekly closing day, so a traveller in Eskişehir during 14–25 September should not plan a museum visit simply because the regular timetable is still visible elsewhere on the site.

After reopening, OMM's published regular hours are Monday closed; Tuesday through Saturday 10:00–18:00; and Sunday 11:00–18:00. Ticket sales end thirty minutes before closing. Current official admission is 200 TL full and 150 TL reduced, with a separate group rate and free categories for OMM members, disabled visitors and one companion, children twelve and under, ICOM cardholders, museum-professional association members and press. The museum is at Şarkiye Mahallesi, Atatürk Bulvarı No:37, Odunpazarı/Eskişehir. Its location is ideal for a walking itinerary. The wax museum, glass museum, Independence Museum and traditional Odunpazarı streets are all in the same cultural area. Allow about ninety minutes to two hours for OMM when a full exhibition is running, longer if you attend a talk or workshop. During an installation transition, the time needed may be shorter or access may be reduced, which is why checking the day's programme is particularly important now.

Accessibility is well documented. OMM states that wheelchair users can enter through the café and reach all floors by lift; accessible toilets are available, wheelchairs can be borrowed and visually impaired visitors can use audio-navigation support through the Hayal Ortağım mobile application. This makes OMM one of the more predictable cultural venues in the district for visitors with specific mobility needs. Groups of twenty or more are asked to contact the museum in advance.

OMM also functions as a programme venue rather than only a set of galleries. Artist talks, workshops, seminars and educational activities are part of its mission. Travellers visiting Eskişehir for a weekend should check the calendar, because an event can add substantial value to the visit. Conversely, a person who only wants to see a particular exhibition should confirm dates carefully; contemporary museums often spend time installing and deinstalling shows, and mid-September 2026 is exactly such a transition period.

Odunpazarı Modern Museum is strongest when experienced as both building and institution. Its architecture connects contemporary design with the surrounding historic district, while the programme brings modern and contemporary art into a city better known to many travellers for heritage streets and municipal museums. For visits from 26 September onward, allow at least ninety minutes and use the official hours and ticket page; during the present 14–25 September installation closure, explore the surrounding Odunpazarı quarter instead and return only after the museum has reopened.
