Şehit Cuma Dağ Natural History Museum is Ankara's major museum of geology, paleontology and mineral resources, operated by the General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration (MTA) in Çukurambar. Founded in 1968 and later moved into a dedicated museum building, it brings together fossils, minerals, rocks, mining history, scientific models and educational installations. It is especially useful for families, school-age children and anyone interested in the physical history of Anatolia rather than human archaeology. The main practical limitation is time: four levels and several large thematic sections make this much larger than a quick dinosaur stop.
MTA describes the institution as Türkiye's first national natural-history museum. Its collections grew from geological fieldwork carried out across the country, and a 2026 MTA publication places the museum within a continuing program of scientific research, conservation, exhibition and public education. Turkish Museums says more than 5,000 objects and specimens are displayed. The range matters because it prevents the museum from being only a fossil hall: visitors move from astronomy and earth sciences to animal evolution, mineralogy, gemstones, mining technology and Türkiye's underground resources.
The ground floor introduces the museum in a highly visual way. Displays include the solar system, a science sphere, a dome-format planetarium, temporary exhibitions and education spaces. Large exhibits include the skeleton of a prehistoric elephant from Kahramanmaraş, material related to giant terrestrial mammals, a fin-whale skeleton and reconstructions of famous dinosaurs. The value of these displays is not that every spectacular skeleton is locally excavated; labels distinguish original fossils, casts and reconstructions. For children, that distinction is worth discussing rather than treating all large models as equivalent evidence.
Upper sections shift toward minerals, rocks and mining. Systematic mineralogy explains the building blocks of the Earth's crust, while rock displays connect mineral composition to geological processes. Gemstone cases provide a more immediately decorative counterpoint, and exhibits on metallic ores, industrial raw materials and energy resources link geology to everyday materials. A mining-history section places extraction technology in a longer human context. These rooms make the museum unusually relevant to understanding why MTA, a scientific and resource-survey institution, operates the collection.
The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 09:00 to 16:00 and closes on Monday. Turkish Museums lists the same schedule for both summer and winter. An education portal operated within Türkiye's school system states that admission is free and recommends arranging a visit by appointment, particularly relevant for school groups. Because group policies can change, independent visitors should still check the current museum page before making a special journey.
Accessibility information is stronger here than at many historic museums. Turkish Museums marks the site as disability-friendly and lists parking, toilets, a café, a shop and guide service among the facilities. It also specifically describes the section for blind visitors. That does not guarantee that every laboratory, archive or non-public area is accessible, but the public museum was designed as a modern multi-level science venue rather than adapted from a centuries-old building. Visitors with specific mobility needs should still confirm lift operation and the route to temporary exhibitions.
The museum stands inside the MTA complex at Dumlupınar Bulvarı No:11 in Çukurambar. Use the full museum address rather than a generic MTA pin because the campus contains multiple institutional buildings. A realistic first visit is about two to three hours. Families focused mainly on fossils and dinosaurs can shorten that, while visitors interested in mineralogy, mining history and the scientific displays will need more time. The energy and geology parks associated with the wider MTA campus may also add time when open and relevant to your visit.
For school-age visitors, the strongest way to use the museum is to follow the evidence rather than only the biggest objects. A fossil can be read alongside the geological layer and environment that produced it, while mineral specimens connect naturally to the later displays on raw materials and mining. That progression explains why the institution combines paleontology with economic geology: MTA's field research concerns both the history of the Earth and the resources found within it.
This is a particularly good counterpoint to Ankara's archaeology museums. Instead of asking how societies lived in Anatolia, it asks what the land itself is made of, how it changed over millions of years and how fossils and mineral resources are studied. That wider timescale is the museum's distinctive appeal. If you arrive expecting only dinosaurs, you may be surprised by how much of the visit is about geology, minerals and the scientific work that turns field samples into evidence about the history of the planet.
