Motorbike taxis are everywhere and the drivers will pester you whenever you leave your hotel or walk down the road. Over in the tourist area, xe om trips are much cheaper if you can bargain. For western travelers it might be a bit difficult to bargain down the prices (10,000-15,000 dong will pay for a ride from one end of the strip to the other). Taxis are also abundant, costing slightly more than that in Ho Chi Minh City but still friendly rates (beginning at about 20,000 dong).

Several resorts and travel agents rent out motorcycles and bicycles. Motorbikes and bikes are great options due to low traffic volume. The cost of renting motorbikes is between 60,000 and 150,000 dong per day depending on time of day hours needed and age/type bike (automatics may cost 230,000). Motorcycle rentals in Mui Ne has been noted to reduce following cases of bike thefts as well as enforcement of driving licenses by police officers. It would be more convenient for you if your hotel were able to rent it since they have your passport already. When going towards Bau Trang (White Lake), all motorbikes on this road are stopped by Mui Ne police who demand no less than 1 million Vietnamese Dong from any foreigner without an international driver’s license.

Cycling around Ham Tien and Mui Ne needs caution. Traffic is light especially during summer but nobody obeys any traffic laws here. A typical example is when Vietnamese cyclists turn left from right lane. Moreover, Vietnamese cyclists never stop nor look before merging into main route from side roads below them. The rise in large buses transferring Russian tourists back into and out of Ham Tien, and unregulated jeeps that transport hundreds of tourists to the White Sand Dunes every day have increased the risks for motorbike riders and pedestrians along Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street. Deaths from road accidents are frequent occurrences. Rumor has it there are up to thirty people killed in accidents each month. If you plan on cycling in this region it would be wise to have a medical insurance if you could afford one.
