Miami Beach, part of the Miami metropolitan area in South Florida, is a coastal resort city in Miami-Dade County, Florida and is a vivid and energetic place. Situated on a sequence of natural and manmade barrier islands between the calm Biscayne Bay and the great Atlantic Ocean, this municipality is The bay divides Miami Beach from the mainland city of Miami naturally. Among Miami Beach’s several neighborhoods, South Beach is the most well-known 2.5 square miles (6.5 km²) one. Together with Downtown Miami and PortMiami, South Beach forms the active business center of South Florida.
As of the 2020 census, Miami Beach boasts 82,890 population. Since the early 20th century, it has been a top beach resort in the United States attracting guests from all around for its breathtaking beaches, active nightlife, and rich cultural legacy.
Included on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, Miami Beach’s Art Deco Historic District is among its most unique features. This area is renowned worldwide for its enormous collection of Art Deco buildings. It covers hundreds of hotels, apartments, and other buildings built between 1923 and 1943 in addition to a wide range of architectural forms including Mediterranean, Streamline Moderne, and Art Deco. Geographically, the Historic District runs east from the Atlantic Ocean, west from Lenox Court, south from 6th Street, and north from Dade Boulevard along the Collins Canal.
The architectural legacy of the Art Deco District is mostly preserved by former interior designer Barbara Baer Capitman, who oversaw the conservation movement for these historic buildings. Now honoring her contributions, a street in the district bears her name.
With almost half of the tourism in Miami-Dade County coming from tourism, it is vital for the Miami Beach economy. With 15.86 million people living in the county overall in 2017, 58.5% of them chose to stay in Miami Beach. Comprising more than 10% of the city’s running budget, resort taxes provide a significant stream of income. Having an average annual growth rate of three to five percent, resort taxes brought in $83 million in the fiscal year 2016–2017. Miami Beach boasts more than 26,600 hotel rooms and draws an estimated 13.3 million guests yearly in the fiscal year 2016-2017. The average hotel occupancy rate in fiscal year 2015-2016 was 76.4%; the next year it increased to 78.5%.
Among the important players helping Miami Beach to flourish is Mayor Harold Rosen, who controversially removed rent control in 1976. This choice generated a lot of debate, but it finally helped the city to become a top tourist destination.
