Ivan Minchov Vazov was a Bulgarian poet, writer, and dramatist known as “the Patriarch of Bulgarian Literature.” He was born in Sopot, a town in Bulgaria’s Rose Valley (then part of the Ottoman Empire). Ivan Vazov’s works illuminate two historical epochs: the Bulgarian Renaissance and the Post-Liberation (from Ottoman Empire authority) epoch. Academician is the highest honorary title conferred by the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences to Ivan Vazov. From September 7, 1897, until January 30, 1899, he served as Education and People Enlightenment Minister on behalf of the People’s Party.
Vazov’s house in Sofia has been transformed into a museum, complete with a reproduction of his home and period furniture, as well as taxidermically preserved Vazov’s dog. Although the museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, it is not always manned, so visitors are urged to contact ahead. The museum is situated in Sofia at the intersection of Ivan Vazov Street and Georgi S. Rakovski Street.
