The Statue Of Saint Sophia

The St Sofia Statue is 20 meters tall. It is a symbol of the city since St. Sofia is the patron saint of the city.

If you chance to be passing through Sofia, you will undoubtedly see the Statue of Saint Sofia standing on a column in the midst of a busy crossing. Her golden face gazes out into the Batemberg plaza, which is home to TZUM, the Presidency, and the Government Houses.

The 24-meter-high bronze monument was sculpted by local artist George Chapkanov and replaced a statue of Vladimir Ilich Lenin that had previously stood in the same location (the square was also named Lenin at that time). This is Sofia’s newest statue, and it’s a beautiful sight to witness when visiting in Sofia. She is standing at the crossroads of ancient and new culture.

It is a symbol of the city since St. Sofia is the patron saint of the city. Sofia means “knowledge” in Greek, which is why she holds an owl, a sign of wisdom, in her left hand. In her right hand, she carries a laurel wreath, a strong emblem for Greeks and Romans that represents peace, prosperity, and renown, among other things.
