Sofia, the birthplace of the First Gospel Church Sofia was given to the Orthodox priest Pop Todor’s sons, Georgi and Michael, as well as their spouses and two daughters, in 1864. This corresponded with the activity of the first missionaries, Charles Morse and Dr. Henry Haskell, who came in Sofia in 1862 and 1863 to preach the gospel.
Church members acquired the land on which the present structure stands in the late 1980s. The church edifice was built over the course of 11 months and was dedicated on September 17, 1889.
The First Gospel Council Church works to reveal the Word of Salvation and to promote Christian ideals in society.
We are a Christian community that believes in the one and only living and real God, who is eternal, sovereign, and exists in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
We acknowledge the Bible as God’s Word and embrace it as the final authority on our faith and conduct. As a result, throughout our worship services, we lay a special focus on the study of Sacred Scripture, with the goal of applying it in our everyday lives.
The church is implementing and developing new social and cultural projects, such as social cuisine, a café-bookstore, discussions and public forums, general youth gatherings, an art project, a project for disadvantaged children, a project for reintegration of young people from at-risk groups, a museum of the evangelical movement in Bulgaria, a project for a research center of the evangelical movement in Bulgaria, and so on.
The Church is a member of Bulgaria’s Union of Evangelical Council Churches, which was formed in 1888.
