Bulgarian Army Theatre

The Bulgarian Army Theater is based in the former Royal Theater building, which is next to the National Theater Ivan Vazov. The structure itself was constructed in 1936. Almost damaged during WWII, it was rebuilt multiple times and is now a contemporary theater with a main stage seating 500 people.

This is now downtown Sofia, complete with historical monuments and government buildings. The theatre itself is divided into two halls. A 500-seat main hall and a 60-seat basement hall.

The Bulgarian Army Theatre has preserved its original name, although it is now a repertory theatre overseen by the Ministry of Culture. Its current poster has 15 outstanding performances. Members of the group include well-known theater and film actors. Part of the theatre’s aesthetic goals include new interpretations of classic and current play. It covers the introduction of new writers and plays to the theatre. The performances include a wide range of genres and creative approaches. The audience may see a classical play, a contemporary dance performance, commedia dell’arte improvisations, or a thriller with interactive discussion between performers and the audience.

In its 50-year existence, the Theatre has traveled the scenes of Germany, Russia, Mexico, Spain, France, Israel, Macedonia, Belgium, Canada, Switzerland, and the United States with its greatest productions. The Theatre has taken part in the Festival of Classic Spanish Drama in Almagro, Spain, the Festival of Avignon, France, the biennale New Drama from Europe in Bonn, Germany, the International Olympiad in Moscow, the International Festival of Tel-Aviv, and the Macedonian Theatre Festival “Ohrid Summer.” These festivals’ audiences are the fens of Bulgarian theatre and theater.
