In Nessebar, the Church of St. John Aliturgitos is the biggest medieval temple. Similar to the Church of Christ Pantokrator, it is a cross-domed church constructed of bricks and light limestone and ornamented with ceramic inlays of various hues. The church was dubbed “Aliturgitos” since no religious services have ever been held there (“without liturgy”).
The church was severely damaged after the 1913 earthquake. On the ruins of the western wall were discovered fourteenth-century drawings of frigates. The temple’s floor is mosaiced with white, red, and green rhombuses, circles, and triangles.
