Wiener Neustadt

Wiener Neustadt is a city in Lower Austria, about 50 km south of Vienna. It is the second-largest city in the state and the tenth-largest in Austria, with a population of about 45,000. Wiener Neustadt was founded in 1192 by Duke Leopold V of Austria, who used the ransom money from the capture of King Richard I of England to build a new city near his castle. The city soon became a prosperous and influential center of trade, culture, and politics in the region. The city was also a strategic military base, as it was the seat of the Theresian Military Academy, the oldest military academy in the world, and the headquarters of the Austrian Air Force. The city suffered severe damage during World War II, when it was heavily bombed by the Allies. The city was rebuilt after the war and became a modern and vibrant city in the post-war era.
