SO/ Vienna is an architecture-led hotel. Accor describes the building as an avant-garde Jean Nouvel design enhanced by Pipilotti Rist’s art installation. Das LOFT is where those two contributions become most visible to non-hotel guests. Floor-to-ceiling glazing reduces the sense of enclosure, while the ceiling introduces intense colour that changes the room’s visual balance after dark.

Rist’s work is not a small artwork hung in one corner. It forms a luminous overhead field that can compete with the skyline for attention. This is why architectural guides recommend Das LOFT even to people who are not primarily interested in fine dining. The room functions as an accessible vantage point on contemporary Vienna design, provided guests understand that it is still a working restaurant and bar rather than a free observation deck.

The building’s location at the Danube Canal creates a useful urban perspective. From above, the boundary between first and second districts becomes legible, and St. Stephen’s Cathedral appears within the roofscape rather than as an isolated monument. Visitors interested in city form may find the daylight or sunset period more informative than late night, when illuminated landmarks dominate.

The view changes dramatically with weather. Clear evenings reveal the Alpine edge beyond the city under the right conditions, while low cloud can reduce long-distance visibility but intensify reflections from Rist’s ceiling against the glass. Photographers should remember that restaurant windows produce reflections after dark. The better strategy is to enjoy the skyline as part of the room rather than expecting a clean observation-deck photograph from every table.

Das LOFT’s own site carried a prominent notice that the restaurant and bar would remain closed through 2 September 2026, with reopening from 3 September. The language promised a “new era” and encouraged September bookings.

This timing matters because search engines can preserve August closure notices after a business has reopened. A traveller using one older page might conclude that the venue is still inaccessible. The correct approach is to compare the notice date with the current contact and booking pages. Here, the closure was temporary and explicitly ended before the present travel date.

The reopening does not mean every subpage was updated perfectly. One German contact/FAQ page still differs on Sunday’s general start time. That kind of inconsistency is common immediately after an operational change. The most recent dedicated SO/ Vienna restaurant-and-bar pages in both languages provide the best current baseline, while the discrepancy is recorded rather than hidden.

Das LOFT operates across several dayparts, and each should be planned separately. Breakfast is a hotel-style morning service, 06:30–10:30 on weekdays and 07:00–11:30 on weekends and public holidays. Dinner begins at 18:00 Monday-Saturday and at 19:00 on Sunday, ending at 22:00. The bar opens earlier in the afternoon and remains open later into the night.

This means a 17:00 visitor can have drinks and the skyline but not yet order the dinner menu. A 23:30 visitor can still use the bar on many nights even though the kitchen is closed. Travellers who want both sunset drinks and dinner should reserve a table around the transition rather than assume one service flows automatically into another.

Sunday brunch is a separate programme from 13:00 to 15:00 when operating. The current Das LOFT site says brunch is taking a summer break, while SO/ Vienna continues to present Sunday brunch as a hotel culinary highlight. Visitors planning brunch should verify the date rather than assume the weekly schedule is active every Sunday. The core bar and dinner hours are more stable.

Das LOFT uses a credit-card guarantee for restaurant reservations. The current site states that a €25-per-person fee can be charged if the booking is not cancelled at least 24 hours in advance. It also says guests who reserve the restaurant but decide to use only the bar can face the same cancellation charge. This rule is unusually relevant because many visitors want the view but do not necessarily want dinner.

If drinks are the goal, use the bar as a bar. Walk-ins are welcomed when space permits, and staff can direct waiting guests. If dinner is the goal, keep the restaurant reservation and plan to use the dining table. Separating these two intentions before booking avoids unnecessary charges and helps the venue manage limited window seating.

Specific table requests can be added but are not guaranteed. This matters for visitors who want a precise skyline angle or window position. The entire room has substantial views, so a non-window table is not equivalent to losing the city panorama completely. Groups should use the dedicated group-booking contact because ordinary online tools may not handle larger parties or private-event arrangements appropriately.

The cancellation policy makes last-minute weather anxiety a poor reason to reserve speculatively. A cloudy forecast does not eliminate the value of the room, and cancelling inside the stated window can carry a fee. Travellers who care only about a perfect sunset should consider the more flexible bar route rather than locking themselves into a dinner reservation several days ahead. Those who value cuisine and design will have a strong experience even when the horizon is less dramatic.

SO/ Vienna currently describes Das LOFT as creative international dining with signature cocktails and an average menu price positioned firmly in the premium range. Accor also lists vegetarian, gluten-free and other special-menu options. The cuisine should therefore be considered part of the destination rather than a token accompaniment to the panorama.

At the bar, a wide wine selection and colourful cocktails support after-work and late-night use. The view can easily dominate decision-making, but the better planning question is which service style suits the group. Couples may prefer a dinner reservation; friends may be happier with bar seats and food from the bar menu; a celebration may need private-event coordination.

Prices and specific dishes can change quickly after a reopening, so the live menu is more valuable than reproducing a static 2026 dish list. The durable attraction is the combination of food, cocktails, art and skyline. Visitors should budget for a premium hotel-rooftop experience rather than compare it with a casual city viewpoint.

Breakfast offers the least obvious but often most practical way to experience the architecture. Morning light makes the ceiling and city view readable without the higher evening bar energy, and the service window begins before most central attractions open. Hotel guests naturally dominate that period, but the venue is presented by SO/ Vienna as a public restaurant. Visitors coming from outside the hotel should still confirm breakfast availability for non-residents when booking, especially on busy weekends.

Das LOFT explicitly states that the venue is reachable by elevator and asks visitors to report specific requirements before arrival. Accor likewise marks the hotel and restaurant wheelchair accessible. This is a strong accessibility baseline for a high-floor venue, where some rooftop bars depend on stairs or constrained historic lifts.

Drivers can park in the underground Design Tower garage and use level P3 for the direct lift route to the 18th floor. Valet parking is also available. Public transport is usually simpler: Schwedenplatz U1/U4 sits close across the Danube Canal, and trams connect along the canal and through the second district.

The location also makes walking practical from Stephansplatz and the first district. Accor estimates St. Stephen’s Cathedral at roughly an eleven-minute walk from the hotel. After a late bar session, night transport and taxis remain straightforward because the venue is central. Guests should still check the final U-Bahn schedule on Sunday through Thursday, when the bar remains open until 01:00.

Pet policy is more liberal than at many skyline restaurants because SO/ Vienna lists pets as welcome at hotel level, but guests bringing an animal to Das LOFT should still ask about the restaurant-specific rule before arrival. A hotel-wide pet policy does not necessarily mean every table or bar zone is appropriate for dogs during dinner service.
