Stuben started depicting ski pioneers from the Lake Constance region at the beginning of the twentieth century. One notable example is Viktor Sohm, who later became Hannes Schneider’s teacher.Fridtjof Nansen, who popularized skiing in Europe, is said to have visited Stuben before World War I.However, the early days of skiing in Stuben were slowed down by the First World War.Today, Stuben is a popular tourist destination located in the heart of the Arlberg region. It is conveniently situated next to the Ski Arlberg ski slope.
Since 1956, there has been a chairlift consisting of two sections that operates from Stuben to the southern part of the village of Albona. Albona is a ski mountain located in the Verwall Group, known for its excellent off-slope opportunities in powder snow. This chairlift is one of the notable features of the Arlberg ski region and reaches an elevation of 2400 meters above sea level.The ski region around Albona is linked to the Ski Arlberg lift network.
The Valfagehrbahn is a 6-seater chairlift located on the Alpe Rauz. It provides access to the Pfannenkopf and the Ulmer Hütte.

Stuben am Arlberg is a constituent part of Ski Arlberg, which happens to be the largest skiing region in Austria. In Stuben, Zürs, Lech, Sankt Christoph, and Sankt Anton, skiers can enjoy a wide range of skiing opportunities. With a total of 88 lifts and slopes, there is plenty to explore. The downhill ski runs span an impressive 305 kilometers, offering something for every skill level. Among these, there are 131 kilometers of light slopes, 123 kilometers of average difficulty, and 51 kilometers of challenging terrain. Additionally, there are 200 kilometers of freeride slopes for those seeking a more adventurous experience.
The Alpe Rauz is a significant location within the Ski Arlberg ski region. It serves as a connecting point for the ski slopes of St. Christoph, Lech/Zürs, and Stuben. Alpe Rauz is the designated starting point for the Valfagehrbahn chairlift, as well as the Flexenbahn and Albonabahn II, which are both 10-passenger gondola lifts. The Albonabahn is a ski lift that provides a connection between Stuben and the St. Anton and St. Christoph ski areas. In addition, there are ski buses available to transport skiers from Alpe Rauz to Zürs.

Stuben is widely recognized as one of the snowiest communities in the world, which means that it consistently experiences snowy conditions year after year.
Summer Tourism
Part of the Austrian long-distance hiking path 01, also known as “Nordalpenweg,” goes through Stuben, specifically the Ulmer Hütte. It is situated along the European walking route E4.The Ulmer Hütte serves as a starting point for the Lechtaler Höhenweg and can be reached in approximately two hours from the Alpe Rauz car park. Alternatively, the Valfagehrbahn can provide a quicker means of transportation. The Kaltenberghütte was built in 1928 and is situated on the Bludenzer Alpe, overlooking Stuben.The Nenzigastalpe, Ravensburgerhütte (located above the Stierloch), Freiburger Hütte, and Göppinger Hütte are also in close proximity.
The Langen (Arlberg) – Nenzigastalpe – Reutlingerhütte – Eisentaler Spitze climb, which takes approximately 9 hours, is considered one of the most challenging routes. With its peak reaching 2753 meters, Eisentaler Spitze is among the highest peaks in the Verwall Alps.
Stuben offers mountain riding as an additional activity alongside hiking. There are over 300 kilometers of designated mountain biking tracks available.
The cable cars operate from June to October.
