The banknote connection gives the place its name. The Oesterreichische Nationalbank lists the 20 Schilling 1967 note, designed by Roman Hellmann, as issued on 4 November 1968 and withdrawn on 30 September 1989. The front showed railway engineer Carl Ritter von Ghega, while the famous reverse view of the Semmering landscape became associated with the present lookout. Ghega designed the Semmering Railway, whose mountain section opened in 1854 and later became the first railway line inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Travellers should note a current route issue: Niederösterreich tourism states that the section of the Bahnwanderweg between Semmering railway station and Wolfsbergkogel station is presently closed, with a signed detour via Südbahnstraße, Adlitzgrabenstraße, Wolfsbergkogel and Kurhausstraße toward the viewpoints. This does not close the viewpoint itself, but it changes the most obvious approach from Semmering station.

The lookout is not wheelchair accessible according to current OpenStreetMap-derived mapping, so the route should be planned as a walking destination. Surfaces and gradients are those of a forest and railway hiking path rather than an urban viewing terrace. Sturdy footwear is sensible in wet weather, and winter snow or ice can make the final approach harder even though the place remains officially freely accessible. There is no staffed shelter, admission gate or guaranteed snow clearance at the viewpoint itself. Visitors should therefore separate “open all year” from “easy in all conditions.”

A normal stop needs fifteen to thirty minutes once reached. The real value comes from combining it with a longer railway walk. The Semmering-Breitenstein route is about 10 kilometres and passes some of the railway’s most important viewpoints and structures; shorter local loops around Wolfsbergkogel and the Südbahnhotel area can also include the lookout. A train passing over Kalte Rinne makes the scene especially vivid, but railway traffic should be treated as a bonus rather than something to time precisely. Why the viewpoint became the 20 Schilling View

Austria’s 20 Schilling 1967 banknote was designed by Roman Hellmann and issued in November 1968. The Oesterreichische Nationalbank identifies Carl Ritter von Ghega as the figure associated with the note. Ghega’s presence linked currency design with the country’s railway-engineering history.

The reverse landscape became one of the most familiar visual representations of the Semmering Railway. Instead of showing a single locomotive or station, the banknote presented the railway as part of mountain scenery. This was an important cultural choice: engineering achievement was represented through its integration with landscape.

The viewpoint belongs to the Lower Austrian railway hiking route and is freely accessible. The easiest local reference is Wolfsbergkogel, with bus and walking access nearby. RUFbus stop SE5 is specifically named for the 20-Schilling-Blick hiking access point.

The classic Semmering-to-Breitenstein railway hike covers around 10 kilometres and normally uses Semmering railway station as its start. Current Lower Austria route information, however, warns that the section between Semmering station and Wolfsbergkogel station is closed and diverts walkers via Südbahnstraße, Adlitzgrabenstraße, Wolfsbergkogel and Kurhausstraße.

This temporary routing matters because travellers following older GPX files or guidebooks may encounter a closure. Current official route signs should take priority. The viewpoint itself remains accessible, but the approach can be longer or less direct than expected.

Walking surfaces are not barrier-free. Open mapping marks the viewpoint as wheelchair inaccessible. The route can also become muddy, icy or snow-covered. Appropriate footwear is more important than the modest distance from nearby roads suggests.
