- By train: From Vienna or Graz, the most practical and picturesque approach to get Semmering is by train, Semmeringbahn. Overlooking the mountains and valleys, the railway crosses the Semmering pass. From either city, the trip takes roughly an hour and a half, and trains run often all day. The fare is roughly 20 euros one way; tickets can be purchased online or at the station. Semmering’s railway station is close to the town centre, where stores, restaurants and hotels abound.
- By car: If you would want to drive, you can follow the S6 highway, which mostly runs along the railway line. From Vienna or Graz, the drive takes around an hour and a half; you will have to pay a toll of roughly 10 euros. Semmering has lots of parking, but be advised some roads might be closed or slick in winter. Based on the distance, the bus ticket runs roughly five euros one way.
- On foot: Semmering is a fantastic place to visit on foot since many hiking paths lead to different points of view and attractions. Situated close to the railway station, the tourist office contains maps and information. Among the most well-liked hikes are the Zauberberg, a ski and Toboggan area in winter and a playground and forest ropes course in summer; the Ghegadenkmal, a monument to the Semmering railway engineer; the Sudbahnhotel, a historic hotel hosting many well-known guests; and the 20 Schilling Blick, an observation deck providing a panoramic view of the area. Appropriate for various degrees of difficulty and length, the hiking paths are well-marked. Still, you should always pack enough water and snacks and dress and wear suitable shoes. Before you start your climb, you should also review the opening hours of the attractions and the weather prediction.
