Parish Church of St. Oswald

Nestled in the center of Seefeld, Tirol, a small Austrian Alps town, the old and lovely Parish Church of St. Oswald stands. Said to be the site of a miracle happened in 1384, the church is among the most well-known pilgrimage sites in Tyrol.

Although historical records first refer to the Parish Church of St. Oswald in 1263, it most certainly existed far earlier. The name of the church was inspired by Scottish missionary St. Oswald, who in the 7th century converted numerous people to Christianity. Originally a basic Romanesque construction, the church was enlarged and rebuilt several times over the centuries, especially following the fabled “Host Miracle” of 1384, which attracted many pilgrims and donations to the church.

Celebrated annually on July 15, the Host Miracle is the most well-known event in church history. Legend holds that local knight and church trustee Oswald Milser insisted on a bigger host—consecrated bread—than the one set aside for the priest during Holy Mass. The priest handed the host grudgingly, but as soon as it touched the knight’s lips it turned blood-red and the stone floor under him started to sink. The stone on the altar melted as well, thus the knight tried to hang onto it. The stone solidified once more when the priest swiftly pulled the host from the knight’s mouth. Still, the host kept in a separate chapel next to the church and kept bleeding. Retired to a monastery, the deeply repentant and ashamed knight passed away two years later.

Though he never competed in the Olympics since he refused to join the Nazi party, Seelos also won several alpine skiing medals and titles.

Mostly in preparation for the Winter Olympics and the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, which were hosted in Seefeld and Innsbruck on several times, the hill was upgraded and enlarged several times over the years. Apart from the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in 1985 and 2019, the hill was used for regular hill contests during the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics. Additionally used for the 2005 Winter Universiade and the 2012 Winter Youth Olympics was the hill. Two hills—a normal hill with a height of HS109 (K-99) and a medium hill with a height of HS75 (K-68)—now comprise the Seefeld Nordic Competence Centre on the hill.
