IMLAUER Sky – Bar & Restaurant is a rooftop dining and drinks venue on the sixth floor of the IMLAUER Hotel Pitter Salzburg at Rainerstraße 6, a short walk north of the historic centre and directly beside the Salzburg Congress area. It is one of the easiest places in the city to combine a full restaurant meal with a broad city-and-mountain panorama without travelling to a separate viewpoint. The venue is open daily from 09:00 to 01:00 according to its current official website, with the main kitchen published from 11:30 to 21:30. The adjoining Sky Bar serves à la carte breakfast in the morning, a bistro offer through the day and cocktails into the night. Visitors can therefore use the same rooftop for very different purposes: breakfast with a view, coffee and cake, a business lunch, a formal dinner, or a late drink. The important planning detail is that the bar and restaurant are related but operate with different reservation rules. Seats in the Sky Bar normally cannot be reserved in advance, except for breakfast, while restaurant tables can be booked. Travellers who care about a particular time, sunset period or dining sequence should reserve the restaurant rather than assume that a bar seat will be available.
The view is central to the identity, but it should not obscure the practical appeal of the location. IMLAUER Sky sits above the Hotel Pitter in Salzburg’s Neustadt, close to Mirabell Gardens, Salzburg Congress and the main-station corridor. That makes it significantly easier to integrate into a day than mountain viewpoints or restaurants that require a cable car, taxi or steep walk. From the terrace and upper-floor rooms, the venue’s own material highlights sightlines toward Maria Plain, Mönchsberg, the Müllner Kirche and other parts of the city panorama. The restaurant is therefore especially useful for travellers who want an elevated perspective but have limited time or mobility. Access is via the hotel building and lift rather than an exposed climb. Salzburg tourism lists a barrier-free route through the hotel side entrance using a ramp and elevator, as well as an accessible restroom. The terrace is paved with flagstone, so wheelchair users should still ask for the most suitable table and route when booking.
Food is presented as Austrian and international rather than as a narrowly traditional Salzburg menu. The official venue describes a broad programme of regional ingredients, meat, fish, pasta, desserts from the in-house patisserie and drinks ranging from wine and beer to spirits and cocktails. Salzburg tourism also records gluten-free and lactose-free options. For travellers, this flexibility is useful: one member of a group can treat the visit as a destination dinner while another can focus on the rooftop bar and lighter bistro service. The venue’s 2026 tourism listing records one Gault Millau toque and 12/20, signalling a quality-oriented restaurant without requiring the formality of a highly structured tasting-menu experience. Still, individual dishes, breakfast details and kitchen windows can change. The direct venue website currently publishes the main kitchen to 21:30, while Salzburg tourism lists hot kitchen service to 21:45. The direct Sky Bar page publishes breakfast from 09:00 to 11:30, whereas another tourism presentation gives a broader breakfast window.
The rooftop was created as part of a major transformation of Hotel Pitter. IMLAUER’s own retrospective explains that the company acquired the hotel in 2008 and opened the Sky Bar & Restaurant in November 2014 after adding a sixth floor. That origin matters because the venue is not an old historic rooftop adapted casually to tourism; it was designed as a modern panoramic hospitality space on top of a long-established hotel. The layout includes restaurant rooms, bar areas and a terrace capable of handling both individual guests and larger groups. Salzburg tourism lists approximately 50 seats in the Mönchsberg room, 100 in the main Sky Restaurant and 100 on the terrace, with groups up to 150. Such capacity also means the atmosphere can vary. A weekday morning may feel like a relaxed hotel-adjacent breakfast venue, while evenings, weekends and event dates can be much busier. The bar is kept publicly accessible even when parts of the restaurant are booked exclusively, according to the tourism listing, but that does not guarantee a seat.
For most travellers, the best visit is one that matches the rooftop’s strongest feature to the right time of day. Breakfast offers daylight and a calmer start, especially if reserved on a weekend. Late afternoon provides a transition between sightseeing and dinner. Evening is the most atmospheric choice for city lights, cocktails and a full meal, but it is also when advance planning matters most. Sunset time changes dramatically across the year in Salzburg, so anyone booking specifically for the transition from daylight to night should check the date’s sunset and request an appropriate table without assuming terrace seating can be guaranteed. Weather can move the experience indoors, and terrace access may be limited by conditions or events. The restaurant remains worthwhile in poor weather because the upper-floor position and glazed spaces still provide a sense of elevation, but the open-air element is naturally seasonal. Taken on its own terms, IMLAUER Sky is a practical panoramic restaurant rather than a formal observation deck: the view comes with hospitality service, reservation rules and normal restaurant constraints.
