Fuxn – Salzburger Volkswirtschaft is a large modern Wirtshaus at Vogelweiderstraße 28 in Salzburg's Schallmoos district, east of the Old Town and within walking distance of the main railway station. The name “Volkswirtschaft” is deliberately playful: the restaurant uses it to describe a public living room and dining room where food, beer, conversation, events and a sense of neighbourhood are meant to coexist. For travellers, that concept matters because Fuxn is not trying to recreate an antique inn or present Austrian cooking as a museum experience. It is a contemporary city tavern that builds its identity from regional products, familiar Austrian dishes, local beer culture and a very large social space.
The present operation is run by Fuxn GmbH & Co KG under managing director Johannes Absmann. Its own philosophy focuses primarily on the Bavarian-Austrian culinary area while remaining open to neighbouring European traditions that historically influenced Austrian cooking. This gives the kitchen room to serve recognizable Wirtshaus classics without locking the menu into a rigid historical catalogue. Current food pages highlight established dishes such as marinated Styrian roast chicken, veal butter schnitzel, handmade Carinthian Kasnudeln and changing meat cuts, alongside seasonal specials and a separate afternoon menu.
Sourcing is one of the restaurant's clearest points of differentiation. Fuxn publishes supplier information rather than relying only on broad “regional” language. Its materials describe work with family and small-scale businesses, meat from identified regional producers, vegetables and fruit from local suppliers, bread and grain producers, and beer brewed with Brauhaus Gusswerk. The restaurant also emphasizes environmental and animal-welfare considerations. Travellers do not need to memorize the supplier list, but the transparency helps explain why regionality is part of the operating philosophy rather than a decorative menu phrase.
Beer is central to the experience. Fuxn promotes its own Salzburger Volksbier and seasonal house beers, including beers brewed by Brauhaus Gusswerk. Salzburg Tourism recognizes the restaurant within the city's beer-culture programme. The venue therefore works well for travellers interested in Salzburg beer who prefer conventional table service and a broad food menu rather than the self-service ritual of Augustiner Bräustübl. The two experiences are complementary rather than interchangeable.
Scale is another important distinction. Salzburg Tourism lists four rooms with around 280 indoor seats, plus roughly 200 outdoor seats and group capacity up to 120. The large garden is shaded by chestnut trees and becomes a major part of the restaurant in warm weather. Indoors, the multiple rooms allow different uses at the same time: ordinary meals, company groups, birthdays, seminars and live sports can coexist without placing every guest in one hall. That scale makes spontaneous visits more plausible than at a tiny Old Town restaurant, but busy events can still affect the mood.
The weekly schedule is straightforward. Fuxn is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 to midnight. Hot kitchen runs from 11:30 to 21:30. Sunday, Monday and public holidays are closed. From 14:00 to 17:00, the restaurant publishes a smaller afternoon menu, which is useful for visitors eating between conventional lunch and dinner periods. The venue remains open after the kitchen closes, so a late drink is possible even when a full hot dinner is no longer available.
Reservations are available by phone, email and online booking. The benefit is strongest for weekend evenings, large groups and warm-weather garden visits. The restaurant explicitly prohibits bachelor and bachelorette parties, which is an unusual but useful rule to know before planning a group celebration. Children are welcome, with Salzburg Tourism listing highchairs, a playground and a children's menu. Dogs are also allowed.
Accessibility is better documented than at many historic inns. Salzburg Tourism classifies Fuxn as partly barrier-free, lists an accessible toilet and two accessible parking spaces, while OpenStreetMap-derived data also mark wheelchair access positively. The “partly” qualifier still matters because a multi-room venue and garden can have different routes. A guest who needs a particular step-free table should ask at reservation time rather than assuming every section is identical.
The Schallmoos location is slightly outside the most concentrated visitor zone, but it is not remote. Open mapping places Fuxn less than a kilometre from Salzburg Hauptbahnhof. The restaurant publishes a separate parking location at Sterneckstraße 33, and the surrounding district is well connected to central Salzburg. For travellers staying near the station or Neustadt, Fuxn can be easier to reach than some Old Town restaurants. For Old Town visitors, the short move east creates a useful change of atmosphere.
Fuxn is therefore best chosen when the group wants a lively, generous Wirtshaus experience with regional sourcing and serious beer culture but not necessarily a centuries-old dining room. The strongest visit may be a weekday lunch, a warm afternoon in the garden or an evening with several shared dishes and house beer. The venue is large enough to feel sociable, but its published sourcing and local philosophy give it more specificity than a generic high-capacity tavern.
