Radstadt, an old town in the Austrian state of Salzburg, lies in the St. Johann im Pongau area. With 5,000 people, it is known as the “old town in the mountains” due to its scenic surroundings and well-maintaining ancient town center. King Rudolf I of Habsburgs granted Radstadt town status in the 13th century, so starting her vibrant and rich history. The Salzburg archbishops built the remarkable defensive walls and towers still encircling the old town today, using the town as a stronghold and major trade center. Radstadt also went through several sieges, fires, plagues, and wars that shaped the resilience and character of the city.

Radstadt takes great pride in its year-round honored customs and cultural legacy. Among Radstadt’s most well-known neighbors was Paul Hofhaimer, the best organist and composer of his day. While performing as Emperor Maximilian’s court organist in Innsbruck, he wrote many pieces for choir and keyboard. Radstadt hosts a celebration in his honor each year comprising workshops, displays, and performances. Another highlight of the local life is the Radstadt Night Watchman, who guides visitors across the secrets and past of the town every evening from May through October. Radstadt hosts the Easter Egg Hunt, the Harvest Festival, the Advent Market, and the Carnival Parade among other events.

Apart from being a historical and cultural site, Radstadt is paradise for sports and nature lovers. Encircling the town are the grand heights of the Hohe Tauern mountains, which offer amazing views and opportunities for biking, climbing, hiking, and skiing. Radstadt is part of one of Austria’s largest ski resorts, Salzburger Sportwelt, with 270 lifts and 760 kilometers of slopes. Main attractions of the Radstadt-Altenmarkt ski area are its family-friendly, varied courses, modern facilities, and snow-making systems. Furthermore open day and night, Radstadt boasts the longest 6-kilometer toboggan run in the Salzburger Sportwelt. Among the 160 km of cross-country ski paths Radstadt has, one spans 1,600 meters in elevation. Another draw in Radstadt is Therme Amadé, a wellness and spa with indoor and outdoor pools, slides, saunas, and massages suitable for all ages.
