Districts & Neighborhoods in Murau
Murau is a town in Austria’s western part of the federal state of Styria. Comprising almost 31,000 people, the 1,394.6km2 Murau District’s administrative hub is here. Murau is well-known for its historic town center, brewing background, and near proximity to the Kreischberg ski area.
Murau Town
Murau Town is the main tourist destination in the district and its center. Its eminent history started when the aristocratic Liechtenstein family established it in the thirteenth century. Important structures in the town include Murau Castle, St. Matthew’s Gothic parish church, and the town hall. Celebrated for its beer, Murau has been making it since the fifteenth century. You can try regional specialties at a local bar or restaurant in town, or you can learn about the history and production of Murau beer at the Murau Brewery Museum.
Schloßberg
Nestled in the eastern section of Murau, the Schloßberg area—so named for the castle atop the hill—is Ulrich von Liechtenstein built the castle in the thirteenth century; the Schwarzenberg family later renovated it. Still owned today, from the castle park, you can enjoy the broad views of the town and the Mur valley even though the inside of the castle is not public. Additionally situated in Schloßberg is the Holzmuseum, a museum dedicated to the history and culture of wood. It has wooden artworks and several displays.
Sankt Egidi
Sankt Egidi is a hamlet located south of Murau town where the Mur and Laßnitz rivers meet. It’s a calm and lovely place surrounded by forests and meadows. Located in Sankt Egidi, the Murtalbahn, a narrow-gauge railway linking Unzmarkt and Mauterndorf by following the Mur river, is Both nature lovers and train buffs enjoy the railway since it offers a lovely journey over the mountains and countryside. Either get on and off the train at several stations along the line or arrange a guided tour with a steam locomotive.
Stolzalpe
The village of Stolzalpe, on a plateau at 1,200 meters, lies north of Murau town. Riding, hiking, and skiing love this place because of its several paths and slopes for different degrees of difficulty and expertise. Stolzalpe is also well-known for its medical resort, which specializes in sports medicine and orthopedic recovery. The resort has a hotel, a spa, and a modern clinic where visitors may relax and enjoy the pure mountain air and the amazing views of the nearby peaks.
Sankt Georgen am Kreischberg
East of the Murau District, several villages and hamlets form the municipality of Sankt Georgen am Kreischberg. Most famously is Kreischberg, a ski resort hosting the 2015 FIS Freestyle Ski and Snowboarding World Championships. Kreischberg has something for everyone to enjoy, including 42 kilometers of slopes, 13 lifts, a snow park, and a variety of other winter sports, including ice skating, sledding, and cross-country skiing. You can go rafting, hiking, biking, golfing, or to the nearby Wood Museum, which has the biggest collection of wooden objects in the world, in the summer.
Sankt Lambrecht
Comprising several communities and the town of Sankt Lambrecht, the municipality of Sankt Lambrecht is situated in the southern Murau District. This ecologically and culturally aware place lets you enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the Styrian countryside. The main attraction of Sankt Lambrecht is the eleventh century Benedictine Abbey, still in use today. The abbey boasts a museum, a gallery, a Gothic cloister, a Baroque library, and a Romanesque basilica. Sankt Lambrecht also provides a base for bike, hike, and wildlife viewing trips across the Grebenzen Nature Park.
Sankt Peter am Kammersberg
Located west of the Murau District, the municipality of Sankt Peter am Kammersberg consists of six other villages plus Sankt Peter itself. Discover the real and traditional way of life of the nearby farmers in this rural and agricultural area. Among the historical buildings and monuments that define Sankt Peter am Kammersberg are the Gothic church of St. Peter, the Baroque castle of Feistritz, and the medieval castle of Pöllau. One of the several annual celebrations or cultural events is also yours to take part in; alternatively, you might visit the local museum with exhibits on the local history and handcrafts.
