Wotrubakirche

The Wotrubakirche, also known as the Church of the Most Holy Trinity, is a Roman Catholic church located on the Georgenberg in the south-western part of Vienna. It stands at an impressive height of 150 blocks. The church was built between August 1974 and October 1976 according to the designs of sculptor Fritz Wotruba and plans by architect Fritz Gerhard Mayr. It functions as the rectorate church for the parish of Mauer.

The Wotruba Church is situated on the northern slope of the Georgenberg in the Mauer area, specifically at the corner of Rysergasse and Georgsgasse. The region is situated in the westernmost part of Liesing, which is the 23rd district of Vienna. The hilltop located on the outskirts of a natural reserve is situated 1.2 kilometers west of Maurer’s center and is 130 meters higher in elevation. During World War II, this hilltop served as a site for an air communications barracks, which included a training facility and a large fire range.

The star garden of the Austrian Astro Club is situated on a flat area just south of the architecturally unique church. The platform functions as an open-air planetarium, featuring three tall masts that showcase the path of the sun and planetary orbits during star tours.

The parish also uses this space for activities that take place at night, and Wien Modern occasionally holds outdoor performances here.

The structure was designed in the style of Brutalism. The structure consists of 152 unfaced concrete blocks, with sizes ranging from 0.84 m³ (1.84 t) to 64 m³ (141 t). The tallest block measures 13.10 meters in height. When light passes through unevenly positioned panes of glass, it causes the light beams to cross paths. On the altar wall, you can find a cast of the cross that was created by Wotruba for the Hofkirche in Bruchsal.

An expansive communal hall, spanning nearly 350 square meters, is situated in the basement.
