Wienerwald (Vienna Woods)

The Wienerwald, as the northern Alps’ easternmost foothills, is a mountain range between Lower Austria and Vienna that constitutes the Alps’ northeastern terminus.The low mountain range is 45 kilometers long and 20 to 30 kilometers broad, and it is a favorite local pleasure area for the Viennese.Today, it is nearly fully declared as a UNESCO biosphere reserve in the Vienna Woods, including the fringes of the metropolis of Vienna itself.

Geography

The 105,645 hectare hilly to medium mountainous region is located in eastern Lower Austria on the border between the Mostviertel (quarter above the Vienna Woods) and the Industrieviertel (quarter below the Vienna Woods), with magnificent deep views of Vienna and the Vienna Basin from altitudes ranging from 300 to nearly 900 m.

The Wienerwald is bounded in the east by the Thermenlinie (tectonic breaks to the Vienna Basin), in the south by the rivers Triesting and Gölsen, in the west by the rivers Traisen and Große Tulln, in the north by the Tullnerfeld and the Danube to the Wiener Pforte, and in the northeast by the Schwarzenberg Park and the Lainzer Tiergarten.

The valleys of the Alps are primarily east-west and range in elevation from 200 to 400 meters. The contrast between lonely and highly inhabited valleys, as well as their steeply fluctuating slope (around 20 to 75%), is very appealing.The much-lauded Helenental in Baden and the spectacular Hagenbachklamm are particularly impressive.

History

The Vienna Woods have most likely been inhabited since the 8th century. From the 11th century until 1850, the Vienna Woods served as the royal hunting grounds. Following the Völkerwanderung, a Slavic population migrated here under the influence of the Avars, which may account for settlement names like Döbling, Liesing, or Gablitz. Forestry has been practiced since the 16th century. Beginning around 1840, industrial expansion promoted growing habitation in the region.

A march of Polish forces led by King Jan III Sobieski across the northern half of the Vienna Woods (from Tulln a der Donau) to assist Vienna in September 1683.

Plans to destroy much of the forest were proposed in 1870, but there was strong popular opposition, with Josef Schöffel playing a key role. The governors of Vienna, Lower Austria, and Burgenland signed the Vienna Woods Declaration in 1987 to safeguard the region’s natural resources.
