The Wien Museum, with its one-of-a-kind collection of high-quality artworks and historic exhibits, provides insights into the city’s history from the Neolithic to the present day.
The Wien Museum’s most outstanding exhibits date from the nineteenth century: paintings by Gustav Klimt (including the world-famous portrait of his companion Emilie Flöge), Egon Schiele, Richard Gerstl, and Arnold Schönberg, works by the Wiener Werkstätte, and two large city models dating from around 1900 are highlights of the Vienna Modernism period. The living room and fireplace lounge from the architect Adolf Loos’ apartment, as well as the restored flat of the Austrian poet Franz Grillparzer with genuine furnishings, provide insights into this era.
The permanent display is divided into three floors. Early highlights of the collection include archaeological artifacts from the Roman garrison outpost Vindobona, authentic glass windows, statues from St. Stephen’s Cathedral, and weapons and armor. Paintings by Franz Anton Maulbertsch, Johann Michael Rottmayr, and Paul Troger depict the Baroque period. The Biedermeier period is represented by works by Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller, Josef Danhauser, and Friedrich Amerling.
The Karlsplatz building was designed by Oswald Haerdtl, a former employee of Josef Hoffmann, and inaugurated in 1959. The ground level of the museum is mostly dedicated to special exhibitions on various Viennese subjects.
