The History of Walentowski Galerien

The Walentowski Galerien was founded by Peter Walentowski, a former banker who turned his passion for art into a successful business. He started by collecting paintings by German expressionists, such as Emil Nolde, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, and Max Beckmann, and then expanded his portfolio to include works by other masters of modern art, such as Marc Chagall, Joan Miró, Salvador Dalí, and Henri Matisse. He also developed a keen interest in pop art, especially in the works of Andy Warhol, whom he met personally in New York in 1986. He acquired several original prints and paintings by Warhol, as well as by other pop art icons, such as Roy Lichtenstein, Tom Wesselmann, and Mel Ramos.

In 1978, Walentowski opened his first gallery in Nuremberg, Germany, and soon established himself as one of the leading art dealers in the country. He opened more galleries in other German cities, such as Berlin, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, and Munich, as well as in Switzerland, Austria, and Spain. He also participated in numerous art fairs and exhibitions, both nationally and internationally, and built a loyal clientele of collectors, celebrities, and institutions. He also supported emerging and contemporary artists, such as Markus Lüpertz, Jörg Immendorff, Anselm Kiefer, and Gerhard Richter, and introduced them to a wider audience.

In 2017, Walentowski decided to expand his presence in Austria and opened a gallery in Kitzbühel, a town that he loved for its beauty, charm, and culture. He chose a prime location in the heart of the town, where he could display his exquisite collection of artworks in a cozy and elegant setting. He also partnered with the Kempinski Hotel DAS TIROL, a luxury hotel that is located a few kilometers away from the town center, and opened another gallery there in 2018. The hotel guests can enjoy the artworks in the lobby, the restaurant, the spa, and the rooms, and also purchase them if they wish.
