Vorderer Gosausee

The Vorderer Gosausee is a 933-meter-high alpine lake in the Upper Austrian Salzkammergut municipality of Gosau, at the northern foot of the Dachstein range.A.The Gosaubach, which flows into the Danube via the Traun, is the exit of the Vorderer Gosausses See.The Vordere Gosausee, owned by the Austrian Federal Forests, is a popular excursion destination due to its lovely setting.

The valley station of the Gosaukammbahn to the Gablonzer Hütte, an entry point to the Dachstein-West ski region and in summer to various hiking routes, is located at the beginning of the lake, which is accessible by the state road from Gosau and has abundant parking places.Mountaineers begin their ascent of the Hoher Dachstein from the Vorderer Gosausee through the Adamekhütte at the foot of the enormous Gosau glacier.

The vista from the lake’s mouth toward the Dachstein is one of Austria’s most recognized mountain themes. The virtually symmetrical image of the Dachstein glacier, framed by the Gosaukamm, provides a beautiful view, especially when there is no wind and the lake reflects, but also when the sun is sinking.

The Vorderer Gosausee’s natural water level was a few meters lower, and the lake was not accessible on the left side while looking towards the Dachstein. The road to the alpine pastures on the Gosaulacke and the back Gosausee passed via the Gosaukamm falls on the right.During the first building of the Gosau power plant chain in 1907, a work road on the lake’s left side was blasted through the rock of the Lärchkogel and ran to the back Gosausee.

It is nourished by subterranean springs near the lake’s back end.The natural discharge travels underground to reach the Brunn streams in the Gosau.

During the summer months (backlog period), the lake is highly popular with divers due to its clean water.

Every year in May, a 2-person relay event is held on the 4.5 km long, flat circular hiking track that around the lake.

The “Laserer-Alpin-Klettersteig” is located on the steep slopes of the Lärchkogel on the lake’s eastern coast.
