Vorarlberg Museum in Bregenz, which was founded in 1857, houses a collection of over 150,000 artifacts from various fields of art, history, folklore, and archeology. The museum also hosts exhibitions and events that showcase the past and present of Vorarlberg, as well as its connections to the wider world.
The museum is located in a stunning building that combines the old and the new. The original structure, dating back to 1905, was the former district administration building, which features a historicist façade facing the lake. The new extension, completed in 2012, was designed by Cukrowicz Nachbaur Architekte, a renowned architectural firm based in Vorarlberg. The extension has a distinctive façade composed of 16,656 concrete flowers that create a dynamic pattern of light and shadow. The flowers were inspired by Terra Sigillata vessels and Roman ceramics from the museum’s collection, and they were formed using the bottom of standard PET bottles. The façade is not only a visual attraction, but also a symbol of the museum’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.
The museum’s interior is equally impressive, with spacious and modern galleries that display the museum’s collection and exhibitions. The collection covers a wide range of topics, such as the prehistoric and Roman settlements in Vorarlberg, the medieval and modern history of the region, the artistic and cultural movements that influenced Vorarlberg, and the folklore and traditions that shape the identity of the people. The exhibitions, which change regularly, offer different perspectives and insights into the history and present of Vorarlberg, as well as its relations to other regions and countries. Some of the recent exhibitions include “Vorarlberg and the World”, “The Art of the 20th Century in Vorarlberg”, and “The Sound of Vorarlberg”.
One of the highlights of the museum is the big panoramic window on the top floor, which offers a breathtaking view of Lake Constance and the Lindau beach. The window is a perfect spot to relax and reflect after exploring the museum’s collection and exhibitions. The window also serves as a reminder of the museum’s mission to connect Vorarlberg to the world, and to inspire curiosity and discovery among its visitors.
The Vorarlberg Museum is more than just a museum. It is a cultural treasure that celebrates the diversity and richness of Vorarlberg, and invites everyone to learn more about this fascinating region. The museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is 9 euros for adults, 7 euros for students and seniors, and free for children under 18.
