Vierzehn-Nothelfer-Kirche

The Fourteen-Nothelfer-Kirche is a Roman Catholic church located in the 14th district of Graz, specifically in Eggenberg. The Brothers of Charity Hospital in Eggenberg is home to the institutional church.

The baroque building is located adjacent to the Hospital of the Brothers of Mercy, situated on a foothill of the Plabutsche. The church was constructed in 1680, as indicated by a votive inscription related to a plague. The construction of the building commissioned by Johann Anton II Joseph von Eggenberg was likely completed around 1684.It is quite rare for an establishment in Styria to receive the patronage of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. The church was given to the Congregation of the Brothers of Charity in 1950.

The medium-sized church building has a tower with an onion-shaped roof. The building is attached to semi-circular chapels and a choir with side annexes. The tower hall features a cross vault. The interior of the building consists of a compact three-bay nave, featuring a mirror vault design. The exterior of the building is adorned with sandstone sculptures and stucco-framed niches and gable figures, all of which were created during the original construction period. There is a mistake in the description of the interior. It features a stuccolustro parapet adorned with the coat of arms of the Eggenberg-Sternberg families. The chancel niche was constructed during the second quarter of the 18th century. The artist responsible for the secco paintings featuring the Holy Trinity and a pomegranate is Toni Hafner.

Some of the notable interior features include a painting of Maria Immaculata created by Hans Adam Weissenkircher in 1687, a Neo-Renaissance tabernacle from 1886, a Vespers picture in the late Gothic style dating back to around 1510 or 1520, and wooden figures of the apostles Peter and Paul from the 18th century. The side chapels are adorned with Toni Hafner’s images depicting the Way of the Cross. In the sacristy, you can find a miraculous image of the Virgin Mary created by Sasso around 1688, as well as a depiction of St. Donatus.
