The Semmering Railway has a history of over 160 years. The 41-kilometre-long railway line from Gloggnitz to Mürzzuschlag holds a special distinction. Not only does it boast an impressive age, being the first mountain railway in the world established in 1854, but it was also recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998.
The Semmering, which served as both a pass and a town, was a highly sought-after and sophisticated summer destination during the 19th century. A bold plan was devised to open up the mountain region with a railway, aiming to make it easier for the honorable guests, who primarily came from Vienna, to reach their destination. Additionally, this plan aimed to establish a continuous railway connection from Vienna to Trieste.
The Semmering Railway was established in 1854 and holds the distinction of being the first railway line to receive the prestigious designation of “UNESCO World Heritage Site” in 1998. Carl Ritter von Ghega, a brilliant engineer, meticulously planned the technical masterpiece that would become the first standard-gauge mountain railway in Europe.
A workforce of up to 20,000 men and women labored under extremely challenging working conditions and in a rugged terrain during the construction process. These conditions are difficult to fathom in today’s context.
The railway on its main route from Gloggnitz to Mürzzuschlag ascends a total of 457 meters in altitude, with an impressive average gradient of 20 per thousand. The train route consists of 15 tunnels, 16 viaducts, over 100 arched stone bridges, and it gracefully ascends the mountain with sweeping arches.
The Semmering section is currently one of the most captivating railway routes in Austria. Train passengers are treated to an ever-changing view. The Semmering region is adorned with a vast expanse that extends across its forests, peaks, and clearings. The unique characteristics of the railway line can be observed in numerous locations.
The railway hiking trail, which stretches across Lower Austria and Styria, features tunnels, viaducts, and hairpin bends that are both immediate and impressive.
