Town Hall Of Schladming

Schladming Castle is a famous hunting lodge in Austria and the seat of the Saxe-Coburg and Bragança Branch. It is presently known as the city hall.

In 1884, the widowed son-in-law of Brazilian Emperor Pedro II, Prince Lus Augusto de Saxe-Coburgo-Gota, commissioned the Coburg court architect Georg Konrad Rothbart to design a hunting lodge near Schladming. After the collapse of the Brazilian monarchy in 1889, the castle became the preferred residence of Luis Augusto’s son, Augusto Leopoldo of Saxe-Coburg and his wife Carolina of Austria-Tuscany.In 1917, Schladming became the family’s primary residence. In 1940, Schladming bought the castle and transformed it into a municipal hall.On September 21, 2022, a plaque commemorating the building’s Brazilian past was unveiled in front of the contemporary City Hall.

The three-story construction, with a south tower porch, a center risalit, and polygonally oriented north porches, is in keeping with current demands. The partially tiled façade, with its blind windows and walls, plastered battlements, and colored skylights, was based on the building styles of English mansions and palaces from the 16th to 17th centuries.

The interior design was created by painter Otto Recknagel. The hunting room on the ground floor has been kept in its original state and is decorated with the artist’s works. On the second story of the staircase, there is a relief of the Brazilian royal crown. The tower’s third-floor library was enclosed and reopened in 2020.
