Town Fortifications of Braunau am Inn

Braunau am Inn’s medieval defenses ring the old town and are under the administration of the Braunau am Inn municipality, which is located in the Upper Austria district of Braunau am Inn.The ruins of the city walls are presently under monument preservation protection.

The historical district was built in three main sections:

  • In the panes: The oldest portion is on the western side and is already a grid-shaped quarter, with the neighboring rectangular church square to the south and the dominating parish church of St. Stephen, which was mentioned in a 1158 document.
There was a deliberate development in the 13th century with the building of a north-south town center, the northern extension of which is the Inn Bridge, erected in 1260.A wall with an outside ditch served as the boundary.Gates have been placed over the city exits in the north, east, and south, and the southern city gate tower has been retained.
  • The system encompassed suburbs east of Linz, south of Salzburg, and Palmstrasse between the Am Berg ensemble and Linzer Strasse with the public hospital, which was donated in 1416, in the third development phase. The butchers were ordered by the Duke to relocate from the old town to the suburbs, and the slaughterhouse and meat banks were placed on the Graben between Linzer Straße and the Inn.Before 1504, an upstream fortress in the vicinity of today’s ring road was finished.
