Theater Phönix

The Theater Phönix is a free intermediate stage in Linz, Upper Austria, that offers a diverse and innovative program of theater, music, dance, and comedy. Founded in 1989 by a group of theater enthusiasts, the Theater Phönix has grown to become one of the most popular and respected cultural venues in the city. Every year, around 25,000 people attend performances at the building’s three spaces: the theatrical hall, the studio, and the clubhouse.

The Theater Phönix is located in a historic building that was once a cinema. The Phoenix cinema was housed in the Wienerstrasse 25 building for decades, until it was closed in 1988. The Theater Phönix took over the building on the southern border of Linz city center, not far from the Unionkreuzung, and kept the name as a tribute to the former cinema. Through conversion, the cinema hall became the theatrical hall, a spacious and modern auditorium that can seat up to 300 people. The studio, a smaller and more intimate space, was added in 1994. The clubhouse, on the first level, is a cozy and elegant lounge that is only available for events.

The Theater Phönix has faced some challenges in its history, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, when it had to close its doors for several months. On April 2, 2021, a mechanical flaw sparked a fire in the back rehearsal room, and the Plexiglas dome light melted. At approximately 7 p.m., neighbors summoned the fire brigade, who shattered and extinguished the glass front door. All hallways and rooms, including costumes and decorations, were filled with smoke, with the exception of the section of the building in front of the street with the clubhouse and offices. On April 18, the building’s damage was assessed at 300,000 euros and is insured. The cleanup was projected to take 8 weeks in April, with the rehearsal room refurbishment taking until the end of August.

Despite the difficulties, the Theater Phönix has shown resilience and creativity, and has continued to produce and present high-quality shows for its loyal audience. The Theater Phönix is also known for its distinctive and colorful appearance. For many years, the three-story structure with seven window axis has been painted in mid-blue, with a tuft of nearly vertical white lines covering it. This pattern is picked up by the black and white nameplate on the canopy of the entry (left). Three stairs and a wheelchair elevator go up to the four glass doors of the theatrical entryway. On the right, there is a restaurant, a front door, and the entrance to the Phoenix bar of the same name, all of which are accessible through steps. The street area in front of the building is shaped by three light columns in front of two guest gardens, creating a welcoming and festive atmosphere.

The Theater Phönix is more than just a theater. It is a cultural gem in Linz, a place where art, entertainment, and community come together. If you are looking for a memorable and enriching experience, do not miss the opportunity to visit the Theater Phönix and enjoy its diverse and innovative program.
