Teutonic Knights’ House

The Teutonic Knights’ House is located in Graz’s first district, Innere Stadt, on the junction of Sporgasse and Hofgasse.

The house’s origins may be traced back to the 15th and 16th centuries. It housed the Teutonic Knights, who also cared after the estates surrounding the Leech Church. The home was built by combining two separate buildings in the area known as “in der Grueb.”

According to an inscription adorned with coats of arms, Count Seyfried von Saurau bought the building for the Order of Knights on 1 October 1689 and was linked to Hofgasse from 1690 to 1694. The smooth façade, with a marble relief, gives evidence to the late Renaissance style. The stone entrance with the Order’s cross on the keystone was built in the first quarter of the 16th century.

A barrel vault connects the Sporgasse to the inner courtyard. The courtyard, which originates from the first two decades of the 16th century, represents the transition from late Gothic to Renaissance style. A protruding staircase dominates the courtyard on one side. On the top floor, there are also two-story pillar arcades and column arcades.
