The Technisches Museum Wien (TMW) is located at Mariahilfer Straße 212 in Vienna’s 14th district, Penzing. It displays exhibits and models from the history of technology, with a particular emphasis on Austria’s contribution to technical advancement. It features many historical demonstration models, such as those from railways, shipbuilding, aviation, and manufacturing. The working steam engines are fantastic. The TMW also has one of Austria’s greatest collections of historical objectsMusical instruments. The museum is connected to the Austrian Mediathek.

The listed main building was constructed in 1909 according to Hans Schneider’s plans and inaugurated on May 6, 1918 as the “Technical Museum for Industry and Trade.”It shares the Gustav-Jäger-Park with the city center. The Auer-Welsbach-Park is located on the opposite side of the roadway. The building’s light interior courtyards enclosed with glass domes are a unique feature.

The operating company Technisches Museum Wien with sterreichischer Mediathek is a scientific institution under public law of the federal government, established by the Federal Museums Act and the museum regulations of the Technisches Museum Wien, and was registered in the company register on August 15, 2000.

The museum was one of Austria’s earliest typical reinforced concrete structures (Otto Wagner employed this material in 1904 while constructing the Wiener Postsparkasse ).The façade was created in a historicist style, which was popular at the time. The building’s construction, bright display rooms, and wiring, which was quite advanced for the time with 46.4 kilometers of electrical lines placed, not least for the demonstration apparatus and machinery, satisfied the criteria of a working museum building.Schneider’s first design called for a later addition with two side wings.

The building was entirely refurbished between 1992 and 1999.The glass domes of the covered inner courtyards were elevated by one floor, and the surrounding galleries were brought in, increasing the museum’s useable area by 3,200 m2.Following the conversion and remodeling in 1999, the museum now has a total of around 28,500 m2 at its disposal. As an entry space, a glass porch was erected midway in front of the main door.It presently holds cloakrooms for visiting groups, school courses, and so on, as well as cash registers and a museum store.
