Taubenmarkt

The Taubenmarkt is a prominent public area in Linz, Upper Austria.

The square marks the start or finish of the country road and is flanked by it on the south end.Schmidttorstrasse lies to the north, the Promenade lies to the west, and Taubenmarkt lies to the east.

Up until 1880, a chicken market was conducted on a regular basis at the plaza at the north end of the Landstrasse, thus the name. The region around the Sparkassenbrunnen officially gained its current name in 1952.

With the completion of the Holy Trinity Column on the adjoining main plaza in 1716, the pillory was relocated to the Taubenmarkt, giving it more significance beyond its function as a market. For a long time, the plaza could only be accessible by the small Domgasse, until the Schmidttor was razed in 1861, allowing for a link to the main square. The Taubenmarkt became a transition hub for several tram and bus routes in the twentieth century. It is currently not just the city’s busiest plaza, but also the third most visited location in Austria, with 236,000 pedestrians tallied each week between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.

The square now has a fountain in the center. The marble neoclassical work of art was initially positioned on the promenade.Hermann Krackowizer designed it in 1892 for the Sparkasse Oberösterreich’s cash hall. The structure was refurbished in 1952, and the so-called Sparkassenbrunnen fountain was built in the centre of the Taubenmarkt in 1979.

Because of the enormous volume of traffic and its role as a vital hub for local public transportation, the Taubenmarkt has taken on a unique significance in city life. The shops on the surrounding rural road are easily accessible from here. The Taubenmarkt arcade (entry to Palais Weißenwolff with atlases at the entrance portal) with luxury shopping is right on the plaza. The McDonald’s in Taubenmarkt is also a popular hangout for the youthful generation. This location was one of the first in Europe to implement the Easy Order technology, which allows for 100% unattended computerized ordering. The sausage stand, which is open until late at night and serves as a gathering place for night owls, is also a feature of the square’s core.
