Stadttheater Wiener Neustadt

The Stadttheater Wiener Neustadt is a municipal theater located at Herzog-Leopold-Straße 17-21 in Wiener Neustadt, Lower Austria.

Today’s municipal theatre is the former monastery church of the former Carmelite convent, with the façade facing Herzog-Leopold-Straße.The slender two-story structure with a hipped roof was built around 1668.Under Joseph II, both the monastery and the church were profaned, the church was converted into a theatre, and the facade was renovated in classicist forms in 1793.The Municipal Theater first opened its doors in 1794.Inside is a tiny two-tier theater that was refurbished and modernized in 1977-1979 to accommodate 624 people, with an iron curtain designed by painter Wolfgang Hutter. The former furniture of the monastery church, including as the high altar, side altar, pulpit, organ, and sacristy cabinet, are currently housed in Wolfpassing on the Hochleithen Parish Church.

Since the summer of 2016, Christoph Dostal has served as the theater’s artistic director.
