Stadtpark Atzgersdorf

Stadtpark Atzgersdorf is a park in Vienna’s 23rd district, Liesing, in the district of Atzgersdorf, which it is also named for. It opened in 2023 to replace the Wien Süd campground, which had closed some years before. As a result, he now has a physical address: Breitenfurter Straße 267. It covers around 2.7 hectares.

There was a mill, the Kreuzmühle, in the near neighborhood of this region (equivalent to today’s numbers 269-279) that was referenced as early as 1452.It was modified into a steam-powered bone mill in 1852, and its activity lasted until 1887. The mill was purchased in 1888 by the Bohemian-Jewish entrepreneur Gustav Pollak (also the proprietor of the Pollak department store on Kohlmarkt), who transformed it into a leather factory, knocking it down in 1900 and replacing it with another structure, which stopped operations in 1926.The Haus am Mühlengrund is now a retirement residence on this location.

Pollak also had a home with a garden erected near the mill in 1900, the interior of which was designed by Josef Hoffmann, who had previously worked for Pollak.Pollak died in 1933, and the property was sold when Austria was seized in 1938.His spouse and two of his three children committed themselves in 1941; his daughter Vera was able to flee to the United States, but her claims for reparations were denied after the war.The villa was razed in 1968, and the land was turned into a campground. The ruins of a magnificent garden fountain and the enclosure, which were already in terrible shape in 2022, were relics of the villa, and were replaced by a metal fence.

The City of Vienna has designated four trees in the park area as natural monuments due to their exceptional growth. They are yew, ash, black pine, and Turkey oak. All of these safeguards were implemented in 1941, as was the planting of a white poplar tree on the grounds of the adjoining old people’s home.

A modest chapel on the park’s border, towards Breitenfurter Straße, was built about 1809 and has a statue of St. John of Nepomuk from the second half of the 18th century. It is a protected monument with a triangle floor plan split by pilasters. It was originally located on the corner of Hödlgasse (approximately a hundred meters to the south-west) until 1963, when it became a traffic hazard and was relocated to its current site.It was given as a kind of restitution by the father of a particular Theresia Kandl. She murdered her husband with a hoe and was executed on the Wienerberg in 1809.She was the only woman to be hung here. Not least because she was young and lovely, her execution was seen by a large crowd.
