Stadtmuseum Steyr

The Stadtmuseum Steyr has been open since 1913 in Grünmarkt 26 in Steyr, Austria, and its treasures are stored in the Innerberger Stadel and the adjacent Neutor.Heimathaus Steyr and Museum der Stadt Steyr are the original names. In preparation for the Upper Austrian State Exhibition 2021, the buildings were renovated, and the museum received a new design.

The vast storage chambers of the Innerberger Stadel remember its previous use.In the 16th and 17th centuries, Steyr was the center of the iron trade north of the Styrian Erzberg. The city built the storage facility in the early 17th century to keep the food necessary there. The land was bought in 1628 by the Innerberg large trade union, from whence the name comes. The structure was used as a storage facility for about 300 years before being restored to Steyr in 1908.It was to be demolished to make room for a new post office structure. This may be stopped, for example, by the chairman of the “KK Central Commission for the Preservation of Monuments,” heir to the throne Franz Ferdinand. In 1913, the vacant structure was turned into a dwelling.

Until 2018, the “Folklore Collection” and the “Lamberg Nativity Scenes” were on exhibit in the Innerberger Stadel’s entry area and first floor. On show were apothecary pots from modern Steyr, reverse glass painting from Sandl, a variety of farm furniture, and works of art by the famed master steel cutter Michael Blümelhuber.A large Petermandl knife collection, as well as a nail forge, were stored in an addition. This expansion provided access to another outbuilding with the scythe hammer.Karl Steinparz’s ornithological collection was housed in the Neutor, as was a weapons hall with exhibits on Werndl and the armaments complex. The exhibits were modified for the Upper Austrian State Exhibition 2021, the bulk of which came from our own collection. They are now telling the “story of Steyr and its people.”A “red thread” directs visitors around the exhibition, which includes informative texts, film, and auditory material.Interactive stations make the experience more enjoyable.

Even after the state exposition, the history of the bourgeoisie, the importance of the iron trade to Steyr, and prominent individuals remain thematic focal points.Curator Herta Neiß expanded on the popular permanent exhibition by include the Lamberg family’s history as well as rarities from the city museum’s depot, such as a mammoth tooth.Steinparz’s bird collection has been partially returned.”From Steyr’s eventful past, the museum presents a variety of exciting, surprising, and contradictory stories.””They deal with hopes, longings, and fears, as well as progress and failure, the pioneering spirit, and inventiveness,” curator Herta Neiß says. There are both German and English audio guides available, as well as public tours.

The museum focuses on mediation. There are two programs intended exclusively for primary schools: In the program, the children learn about the museum’s founder, Marianne Kautsch, and gain insight into the museum’s areas of responsibility. The “Eisenstadt Steyr” elementary school curriculum focuses on the city’s particular historical circumstances. The history of iron, its relevance to the city, and the high-quality things made from it are all explored.

An interactive session is provided for children ages 10 to 14.Museum chores and the professional groups needed to put on an exhibition are among the topics covered. This is done in small groups, and then another performance is produced and opened simultaneously.

Beginning at the age of 14, the educational program “Experience Original – Researching, Interpreting, and Understanding Sources” focuses on the critical management of historical and current sources ranging from old newspapers to Facebook postings and tweets.
