St. Andrew’s Church

St. Andrew’s Church (the “Andräkirche”) on Mirabellplatz, with its prominent towers, stamps the skyline of the old district’s right side.

The original St. Andrew’s Church was on the Platzl, but it was eventually razed to make room for a larger road. The new Andräkirche, built in Neo Gothic style on Mirabellplatz, was dedicated in 1898. During WWII, the church was partially destroyed in a bombing strike. They began reconstructing the church in a more simple style a few years after the war. The towers were trimmed and crowned with flattish pyramid-shaped roofs in 1969/70, while the front of the church was painted light grey and white.

The interior of St. Andrew’s Church in Salzburg exhibits today’s modified pietistic design, with minimal accent elements. In contrast, the high altar, the crucifix, and windows devoted to the Virgin Mary, as well as statues of various saints, dominate the church interior. The décor is further complemented with fourteen modern paintings illustrating the Stations of the Cross, as well as a Franz Fuchs fresco of St. Christopher. Another addition to the Andräkirche arrived in early 2017: an authentic French organ from 1890.

Every Thursday morning, a popular weekly market known as the “Schranne” is held just adjacent to the Andräkirche. A fantastic opportunity for residents to buy directly from farmers. A fantastic chance for travelers to immerse themselves in the frenetic action of a classic Salzburg market. St. Andrew’s is also utilized for a variety of musical and cultural events.
