St. Andrä Platz

St. Andräplatz is a square located in the Gries district of Graz, specifically in the fifth district. The Dominikanergasse, Dreihackengasse, Grenadiergasse, and Belgiergasse are all streets that intersect with it.The Church of St. Andrä is located on the square as well.

The church hamlet surrounding St. Andräkirche holds significant historical importance as one of the oldest areas within the medieval Murvorstadt. The current location of St. Andräplatz was once the site of the cemetery for St. Andräkirche. The Dominican cemetery was officially closed in 1807 by Emperor Joseph II due to hygienic concerns. This closure allowed for the development of the present-day St. Andräplatz.Based on this information, it can be inferred that the Andrämarkt and the former Straßgangerstrasse, which used to end near St. Andräkirche, are not situated at the present-day St. Andräplatz.

During the early 18th century, Emperor Joseph II significantly bolstered the military presence in Graz, particularly in the vicinity of St. Andräkirche. In 1808, the neighboring Dominican monastery was transformed into what was referred to as the “small Dominican barracks.” This suggests that the previous cemetery may have been repurposed as a parade ground.
